CABG and Temperature Control

Hi all.

I had my triple bypass 10 days ago. Recovery is going well but I do have occasional instances of feeling very cold (which I put down to the beta blockers) and more frequently, instances of being very hot to the point where I go into melt down (sweating through my hair). I'm not stressed by it, I'd just like to know if this is one of the 'normals' that the medical profession tends to leave out of their descriptions of what may or may not happen. I should stress that my core body temperature remains unchanged i.e I am not 'running a temperature'. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hey there Steve, yes very similar, I get overly hot at times, other times freezing. Not sure if it's the meds bit aim to raise to my gp in a week or so when I'm due to see him

Thanks. As luck would have it a doctor friend came over to see me today. He thinks its probably the beta blocker (bisoprolol in my case). I'd be interested in what your GP has to say about it.

I will be seeing the Cardiac Consultant in early November for my first follow-up. If its still an issue then I will raise it and let you know his thoughts

Yep I am on the same Bisoprolol and I have the same issues. Same as you though, if it keeps all the nasty stuff at bay, then I am ok with that.

It's not too comfortable though when it keeps you awake at night. Same as skid112, I find I go from one extreme to the other. Sometimes I get really cold as well So I guess we just have to lump it 😊

Thanks Sina

I'm not sure I agree with 'just have to lump it' comment, its always worth a conversation with the consultants/GP, but that said it is just a minor inconvenience and I do feel better knowing that my symptoms appear to be anything but unique

Hi Steve,

I had a mitral valve repair 7 weeks ago (on low dose of bisoprolol) and almost every night wake up soaking wet, get changed into new pjs then (try to!) go back to sleep again. I'm usually quite hot up until lunchtime then cool down. I spoke to my GP who said that after heart surgery the body has to adjust and temperature regulation can take 3-6 months. Some NHS aftercare booklets mention it. Mine didn't but others I googled said it was quite normal. I wish the aftercare booklets/what to expect were all the same from each NHS trust. Annoying but I hope that's reassuring.

Thank-you. It is always reassuring to know 'its not just me!'

Snap and I am 2 years post op. I woke last night very very hot threw the T shirt on to the floor ( like a teenager ) and turned the pillow over because it had gone very cold. My Wife picked up my T shirt in the morning ( like my Mother used to ) and said it's soaking wet ( WE ) will speak to the Cardiologist on Wednesday and see what he has to say !!!

I love being Mothered all over again lol

Yep I am 11 months down the road and still have issues.

I also take lathyroxine for underactive. So I guess that could also be a factor, the cocktail of meds?

Still, onwards & upwards ha......☹

Steve I like to try and add facts/information to help others know they are not alone on their journey, In fact the Bus is pretty full, but room on top for the ones not to out of breath to climb the stairs. A little humour helps me cope and keeps me on an even keel being ex RN.

Hi,

I too have temperature issues following aortic valve replacement at the end of May. I had not thought to blame the small dose of bisoparol I take . I thought it could be the warfarin but the GP thinks not. The coldness is not as bad as it was but sometimes I just cannot seem to warm up.

Hi Steve,

Like many I was put on Bisoprolol 1.25 mg( very small dose )after CABG x3 done 16/10/23 and have definitely had the feeling of being really cold most of the time. I have gone from telling everyone else to put more clothes on if they were cold at home rather than turning the heat up all the while, to now wearing more and more clothes myself and turning the heat up as well and everyone at home telling me they are boiling. Also my hands are like ice most of the time and to a lesser extent my feet. Strangely I haven't had any of the excess heat mentioned.!!
