From cabg post op confusion to stroke

Hi,I posted over 3 weeks ago about my concerns with my dad's post op confusion after a double bypass and valve replacement. He is still in hospital, had infections and rewiring of sternum

He has now had a small stroke. He walked into hospital with all his faculties a month ago and now can't swallow, see properly, walk, speak properly, even his nurse was in tears, it's horrendous. I know they explain the risks but I don't know how much it sinks in. Feeling scared and panicky.

Thank you. I'll be ok once I've got my head round it all, it's the initial shock. I hope your own situation is positive, cheers

You must be going through Hell I can only give you both my love. They tell us the risks involved with these procedures but we don't think they can happen to us. I had a stroke after my angiogram but luckily it had minimal impact, I think the asprin I had been taking for my heart problem helped. I think even given the risks we'd agree to have the work done as we hope it extends our life and gives us a better quality. It is hard to accept this when you see someone worse than before.

I would say you need to be strong and demanding of the medical people involved and ask them to explain what happened and what next.

We are here if you need to vent.

Thank you. The medical team have been great, but I don't always know if I'm asking the right questions. He is going to be transferred to a stroke unit and I'm hoping for some more answers/plan then. Really wish he'd done a power of attorney too as he's got things to sort out that can't be put off indefinitely

Hi, I am so sorry your dad is having such a bad time with all the complications since his surgery. It's very draining and upsetting for you. If you want to talk to one of the cardiac nurses on the heart helpline on 0300 330 3311 we're there for a chat and very used to talking to people who have gone through the the same sort of thing.

Take care of yourself,

Philippa
