Hello,

The "HLA B51" is a genetic marker for Behcet's Disease. Having this gene can increase your likelihood of developing the disease, along with other factors such as environmental, stressors, family history of autoimmunity, and certain virsuses. This test is not a strict "positive" or "negaitive" test for Behcet's--- so if you test positive, it does not mean that you actually have the disease, nor does testing negative mean that you absolutely do not have it. The presence of this gene can vary among different ethnic groups, so it is not a truly reliable indicator of Behcet's. However, if you have been sick for a while and suffer from many of the symptoms Behcet's causes, and have met the criteria for ulcer outbreaks, then a doctor might still do this bloodtest-- if you have many of the symptoms, all other possible dieases/causes have been ruled out, and you test positive to this gene, then it is highly likely that you do have Behcet's. But again, please remember that testing negative does not rule out this disease.

Here is a couple of readings that explain it a bit further:

Hope this helps some!
