Hair loss?

Hi everyone! I’m currently taking 100mg of azathioprine daily and 50mg of colchicine. I have noticed since taking azathioprine I’ve had crazy amounts of hair loss. I used to have crazy thick hair and now it’s thin and brittle. When I put my hands through it I get a handful. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Hi, I am so sorry to hear about your hair loss. I do suffer from hair loss too and have been having some success with folic acid and magnesium supplements.

Could I ask what dose you are taking the folic acid and magnesium? Thanks Lesley

Hi Lesley I am using 2 x mg Folic acid every evening. During the time that I'm on methotrexate Dr ussually increases this dose to twice that amount. Magnesium chelate 500mg & Magnesuim 100mg it is a a basic one by GNC

I was taking azathioprine 50mg daily and had no issues with hair loss. My doc increased the dosage to 100mg after about 4 months my hair began falling out by the handful. I know I need the medication but the hair loss is a bummer. I started taking Biotin 10,000mcg daily and have seen a slight decrease.

Hi Camp1997

I would suggest if you have not already had a liver enzyme test carried out as part of your Azathioprine treatment then to get tested to rule out any toxicity issues with the colchicine, I had big issues with the drug and this too can cause hair loss. I realise the drug is being used by lots of people successfully but for me I am afraid it was not meant to be. It took 12 weeks for my livers GGT levels to get back in range.

It’s interesting yes, I have severe hair loss with azathioprine and Remicade. I noticed really went through the roof when I started Remicade. I’ve used an essential oil that has been super helpful. I’ve noticed it’s cut my hair loss in 1/2. I use a shampoo called Nioxin, I buy from Costco. It has helped in cutting my hair loss. I know it is frustrating. There are so many frustrating things about this disease, i used to have long, beautiful eyelashes. Now I barely have any. That’s tough. I never thought I was vain. But sometimes things kind of hit you. Like wow. I used to run two miles a day. Now I use a walker and a wheelchair. For me, life changed dramatically, and sometimes it’s like that quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, women like teabags, don’t know how strong they are until they are in hot water. I hope your hair comes bag, try some of the suggestions, it did help, I used Rocky Mountain essential oils. Smells lovely too!
