Bowel symptoms

I'm off to see dietician tomorrow to see if my intermittent diarrhoea, bloating and abdo pain can be managed by what I eat. I have ulceration of the terminal ileum. I also have heart failure with high cholesterol and I'm worried I'll end up not eating anything. As it is I've lost 10lb in past few months.

All the best Julie. I am a Naturopathic Nutritionist and can help if you need healthy fiber meal plans. Let me know how it goes.

Hi there I wonder if you could give us advice on omega 3 and hemp oil in your experience? I posted the whole story above . OUr consultant is wonderful but nutrition doesnt seem to be on his radar which always seems so odd to me. :)

Hi

I manage my abdominal symptoms by eating a gluten-free pescatarian diet with no dairy and no nightshades and low sugar.

Surprisingly, perhaps, I eat a really good, healthy diet based on masses of fresh veggies with pulses, tofu, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds or quorn for protein. In place of bread and potatoes I eat brown basmati rice or noodles made of rice, buckwheat or lentils. There are some pleasant Gluten free breads around nowadays.

It really does work for me, and if I stick to it on a day to day basis I can allow myself to lapse once in a while on a special occasion without ill effects. This is the case with nightshades. I have found I can have a dish with tomatoes, or peppers, potato or chilli once a month or so, as long as I avoid them at other times.

What works for you could be very different, but I found the simple absence of pain and diarrhoea is what keeps me away from the trigger foods. It has made me more experimental too - this week I made a beautiful key lime pie with avocadoes and cashews in place of cream, and my guests kept coming back for more and insisted on getting the recipe!

Good luck with the dietician!

Just seen the dietician. Basically stop eating the foods I am used to. Low FODMAPs, low fat, low salt. Not sure how I'm gonna prepare these meals for me and keep my family fed...I have no energy. Any meal ideas would be greatly received. Thank you.

What foods are you used to juliebover, and what will you miss the most on a low FODMAP diet? Let me know, and I'll see if any if my meal plans fit with what you might enjoy x

Listen to jaxxi

The dietitians can barely pronounce bechets

Jaxxi was spot on

I have the same issue with spots on terminal ileum

Zenpep helps if you stop absorbing nutrients (prescriptive digestive enzymes)

I forgot to add. My nutritionist charged me $400. Her diet plan failed miserably. Maybe I just had a bad experience

Fiber can be a problem for 2 reasons. First , we share very similar traits with ankylosing spondylitis patients. Which means that fiber load has the potential to grow more klebsiella which in turn our bodies over react too

Secondly, very few dietitians know what HLA B27 positive means or understand that the histamine content of food affects us

The fodmap diet will only partially work. At least this is my experience. We all have slightly different versions of this. This is a bechets research survey I posted which corresponds to what jaxxi wrote

I read that study with some interest a few days ago Mres. But their list on page 27 doesn't correspond closely with my triggers. Some of the foods they rate highly as triggers such as tomatoes, correspond with my triggers. But they list nuts and pineapple as the most common triggers and I am fine with pineapple and OK with nuts as long as I don't overeat one type. And they put curry very low on their list, but it's high on mine, as I find chilli very inflammatory. I am very surprised that they didn't include wheat or eggs in the foods they studied, as a lot of non- Behçets people are sensitive to these

I discovered all my trigger foods only after many years of trial and error, testing by eliminating one thing after another and noting the results. And I am still always on the alert for new sensitivities. If I eat too much of one thing, I can become sensitive to it. This happened to me with eggs and almonds a few years ago. Now I only eat them in moderation.

Common sense would suggest that those of us with food sensitivities differ in what we are sensitive to according to our genetic makeup, cultural background, exposure, even likes and dislikes - I liked eggs and almonds too much, overindulged and suffered the consequences!

I would never tell anyone to stay away from any particular food or set of foods as I am not a dietician.

I like bread, pasta. Lots of dishes with onion, gravy and stock, baked beans...which I need to avoid. I'm ok with doing meat and fish with potatoes or rice and vegetables but I'm gonna miss stews and pasta bake. Hubby gone shopping but I will need to do additional shop for my food 🙁

When you are next in a big supermarket, check out the Free From aisle and look for Rice Pasta. It's great! Honestly not that much different from normal pasta. I also love buckwheat pasta and noodles but it's a bit more of an acquired taste.

The breads I enjoy most are the Schar brown ciabbata and Genius brown bread. Great toasted, but make quite a nice sarnie. There are also some very good wraps and pittas around.

The gravy thing is a pain, I'll admit. Are there any FODMAP forums where people exchange recipes?
