Flesh eating sore on lip

Not sure what this is, I thought it maybe a coldsore but it has not scabbed over and does not have any blisters.

Flesh on my lip is a little sore but open. It hasn't wept and there is no pus. It's just a little painful.

Could it be cancerous?

This is most likely herpes simplex from the appearances, but if new sexual contact a screen including a syphilis blood test would be indicated.
