Feel like my body is rejecting my copper coil. Is this normal?

I have had my copper coil in for 10 months now. I get random terrible pains, not abdominal, but vulva cramps, where I can’t move. And then also , mid month I get period like pains in the lower belly that I think are around the time of ovulation. I know some people get them but I didn’t have ovulation pains before the coil was fitted.

Feel bloated 90% of the time and gassy/loose stools for no reason. Not having sex because of all these side effects, so I think I’m going to have it taken out because what’s the point? My GP was good, arranged an internal ultrasound which I had last week and they said at the scan the coil is sitting in the right place. They did say it looks like I’m mid cycle, but I actually had just come on my period that day, so not sure if that’s relevant? Unexpectedly came on the day of the ultrasound because my periods are now so unpredictable. Switches between 21/28 days. Used to be 28 days exactly before the coil. Also when I am on my period it is so heavy. I have had to bleach bed sheets and it has leaked through my tampon after an hour on one occasion. I was told at the ultrasound that ‘some people just don’t get on with it’ and I think that’s probably the case with me. I do wonder whether it’s the copper. I need titanium jewellery for piercings so maybe its an allergy issue.

So the IUD can certainly make periods heavier, so perhaps a switch to the IUS mirena coil would be a good idea. It also is completely plastic with only a tiny bit embedded inside the plastic to see it on an xray etc if needed. If you are having bowel issues , these could be the cause of your tummy pain and should be investigated separately .

oh my mistake it is coated with barium sulfate to show up on scans . This is the IUS composition : silicone, polyethylene, silica, barium sulfate, iron oxide

Thanks so much for that. I did choose the copper coil as I would have preferred to stay away from hormonal contraception but I will definitely consider the mirena coil now.. do you think 10 months is enough time to allow it to have settled?

Oh absolutely. I would have said 6 months was even enough time. Depending on the service they could do a removal/insertion all at the same sitting . Speak to them and see what they are doing for appointments at present. Reproductive health clinics have stayed open throughout COVID.
