HIV transmission from oral sex

Can you realistically get HIV from a HIV positive woman, if they were giving you oral sex (mouth to penis) and you already had an STD (Chlamydia)?

Hi patrickstar,

The chances of catching HIV from receiving fellatio has been estimated to be less than 1:10,000. You are rightly concerned that a concurrent STD might, in theory, increase the chances but even if this risk was increased 10-fold it would still be 1:1,000.

Unfortunately, the person who gave you oral sex is at far greater risk of acquiring chlamydia! I hope you've informed them.

Rgds,

Adhari.

Thanks for the reply! The best way to know is getting tested. I have informed them of the risk I was exposed to, but testing in the current climate is proving difficult since o do not particularly want my family members to know

Adhari I believe the odd are even higher, also the risk of catching HIV with another STI is when the HIV+ person is also infecting you with the STI because the HIV is in the secretions of the STI.

You can get a home test kit from SHL.UK which arrives in a plain grey plastic bag with a small cardboard box inside (Fits through the letterbox) so is very discrete and you only get a text/email when your results are ready for you to check online, so no one else needs to know. Though you should not be embarrassed about having a sexual health check it shows you are responsible!

Thank you! It is just not the best to be mulling over in quarantine. Also what do you mean my ‘odds even higher’?

I mean rather than the chance being 1:10000 it is more like 1:40000

If the HIV positive person is undetectable on treatment for more than 6 months, then even if you have had unprotected vaginal sex with her, the risk should be zero. If they are on treatment as mentioned and if you had oral sex only with them, then again the chance should be zero. preventionaccess.org/
