Chlamydia/Gonorrhea scarring

Hi everyone,

Just curious as to whether anyone knows if the likes of Gonorrhea or Chlamydia can leave scarring that can affect fertility even if the infection is no longer in the body?

I ask because my partner has a, let's says, loose history when it comes to one night stands etc, but she never got tested. She was tested recently as we are struggling with infertility and it came back negative HOWEVER she has been treated with antibiotics over the past few years for numerous infections which I assume could inadvertently clear up Gonorrhea/Chlamydia.

So could she have has these infections in the past that were inadvertently treated to show now she doesn't have them and yet still have side effects that could be causing infertility?

Thanks

Unfortunately yes , and this is the whole reason behind screening for and treating STIs. However 2/3 fertility issues are in women and 1/3 in men. And there are many causes for subfertility not just PID ( pelvic inflammatory disease ) As a sub fertility work up she will have investigations to check about this. Not all causes of subfertility can be found. A full screening includes dye tests of the tubes and the uterus to check they are patent ( open ) - did she have these at a gynae unit ?

Thanks for that. I've regularly been checked and always been clear but she hasn't been regularly checked especially for her history, but been treated with similar antibiotics for sinus infections, UTI's, etc, so worried they could have cleared up the likes of any Stu's before she even knew she had them.

We are awaiting a date to start ivf so hoping all the tests are done then. Thank you

Best of luck. it is recommended both parties have full sti screening prior to IVF. If you are in the UK, and going privately, I would suggest you go to a sexual health clinic for your screen, rather than the exact same screen done by the private clinic which can cost ££££
