Breech baby - any support?

Hey mummies,

Feeling pretty down in the dumps & wondered if anyone could share their experiences.

I’m 34+5 and baby is breech. Has been at every midwife appointment and monitoring scan i’ve had since 25 weeks (gestational diabetes too). Baby is on 50th centile so not overly big.

Ive been told hes unlikely to turn now. Ive also read that babies that dont turn have a higher likelihood if abnormalities. When i asked my midwife today her reply was ‘errmm, well, ahh, yes but they will check and let you know’ which hasn’t exactly filled me with reassurance.

Anyone else had a breech baby? xx

My lb turned breech at 32 weeks and turned back himself at 36+6 so your little one may still turn themselves or you could have an ECV to try and turn them. Good luck xx

I had a breech baby.

He was firmly wedged in from 20 weeks and would not move so I had a planned cesarean at 39 weeks.

He was also a wee chunky monkey and measuring in on the 97th percentile and came out a week early at 8lb 11oz.

Have they suggested turning the baby manually? That is sometimes possible but not possible for me as I bled throughout pregnancy, it does work a lot of the time though.

When you say abnormalities I take it you mean issues with the babies hips. This is common in breech babies and my little boy was born with hip dysplasia and needed a hip brace for 3 months to repair it. They will scan your baby a few weeks after they are born to check for this if your baby is breech as it’s important to correct it early (although my babies hip was so bad that if you pulled his leg it slipped out of joint and so his was diagnosed in hospital).

They have given me a leaflet on ECV but to be honest ive been through so much with the IVF, plus working at a childrens hospital ive seen my fair share of birth trauma during my time and i figure if the baby hasnt turned by himself is it a sign that a natural birth is going to be traumatic. My anxiety wont let me take that risk!

No not so much the hips, that I understand. I mean more like neurological conditions causing abnormal muscle tone which is why the baby hasn’t been able to turn as they should. Ive read that they are more likely to have developmental delay and learning difficulties too. Its such a worry xx

Aw it’s all such a worry isn’t it.

We haven’t had any issues with muscle tone etc and I hope you don’t either.

I haven’t heard of being breech causing development delays, and so I’m assuming the risk is minimal.

Try not to dwell on these things too much if you can and hopefully your wee one will turn 🤞 x

I had twins and both were breech from 25 weeks and I had planned c section at 35 weeks . All went well and those cheeky people are now 4+1 corrected months old . So don’t be worried trust your doctor and everything will be well

My son was born slightly breech. I had scans before, they said he was in the correct position and he wasn't. His legs was like square shape when he was born. He must have only got like this just before being born. I was born with click in hips and midwifes said he might have it too. I went to see a consultant who examined him scanning etc. They said he was fine. He seems to be hitting milestones fine in terms of crawling and sitting and standing. The legs corrected themselves. I work in care with people with learning difficulties/disabilities and complex needs I have never heard breech birth causes this. I have worked with patients where it can caused by premature birth, birth complications such as lack of oxygen, Healthcare problems, parents with alcohol and drug problems and genetics and I have worked with alot of different patients too.

Thank you for replying and sharing your experiences too 🙂 i’m 36+5 now, baby is still breech and ive been booked for an elective c section in 2 weeks.

At my appointment this week i asked the consultant about increased likelihood of breech babies having congenital abnormalities. She said there is an increased risk but normally these are picked up on scans around 28 weeks (ive had regular growth scans due to gestational diabetes), mine have all been great and i’m young (28) and have no other risk factors so the risk is lower although it can’t be completely ruled out. Its reassured me a bit.

Just want him here now!
