Bedroom Design for Autistic Adult

Is there any websites or links where there is advice on how to design or tips on designing bedrooms for autistic adults? My family will be building a new house and i'll be moving with them so I want my bedroom to be designed specifically for my needs with my autism.

Hi. I’d looked at this before but just did a general search, but these are the ones I bookmarked:

For my daughter we ensured she could control the window light through blinds and designed spaces in her room where she had cubbies she could tuck herself into. Dimmer light switch too. We made sure she had wide wardrobes so she had easy to access baskets that could quickly clear her space so she wasn’t overwhelmed. We gave her a book case for her display items as a single space which reduced clutter around the room. Less furniture around the room but plenty of space in her wardrobes so she could hide things away and use the inside of the doors for hanging things. Little objects such as jewellery become less cluttered. Her room is at the back of the house which is naturally more quiet. There is very little visual clutter in her view too - mainly the garden. Neutral colours throughout.

I’d go with your main needs - sensory issues etc and decide how your space should operate from there. It will help you decide on what you find calming and what are your stressors to avoid.

Good luck x

It’s just hard to find ideas online for adults with autism and not kids

Agreed. For my autism, I have issues with too much light. Our home has light areas but we avoided large windows for example. My office area at home is a desk which faces the wall but away from the door (open doors cause me anxiety) but in a corner so I can control the light.

Look at what helps you concentrate, what keeps you calm, what helps you destress and build that into your space.
