Temperapedic foam or temperapedic foam hybrid with encased coils, that is the question

I need to help someone replace his mattress. He does have ataxia with mild, hemiballistic movement, that is not too bad. He may start out in supine, but then sleep on his side, changing position throughout the night. He has shoulder issues as well . He also has apnea. I know I will help him get an adjustable bed because he will use it during the day and a little better for GERD. and I need a mattress that goes with the adjustable. I found a firm but temperapedic foam mattress . but there are some hybrids with coils that have the temperapedic foam as well. I am trying to understand if the coils would be more helpful to him in order to have some bounce to turn and to sit on the side of the bed, or if the straight foam , though firm would be difficult for him . I am in the US. THe problem is that the mattresses in the store are all on relatively high platforms and I can't easily get him on the bed to try it. Anyone have any thoughts as to whether or not straight foam is problematic in turning over night ?

Hi ChamourI would insist that any store selling a mattress allows someone to lie on them to try them out before they buy. Tempur foam mattresses, if too soft, can affect sitting balance and getting out of bed as they can 'collapse' or 'give' too much - they usually have a weight category linked to the 'firm, medium, soft' options. You can get mattresses with an additional foam topper - this provides more stability in the main mattress but comfort via the topper. I don't think a sprung mattress would make much difference to turning but a side rope ladder may help - again I suggest try before you buy. An occupational therapist in your area should be able to guide you more.

Hope this helps.
