What animal are you?

I recently posted about acupuncture and likened myself to treacle in a world of blue arsed flies! I thought about this and now have a better metaphor about me being slow in a fast moving environment.

I’m now like a two toed sloth. See photo.

Moving carefully and slowly through life, with an enigmatic and slightly embarrassed smile. Maybe as I see things that those who rush by may miss. Things that amuse me, and when I have their attention, may amuse others. In the meantime I have all I need, just not as fast as everyone else.

For example we have just returned from a week away. Most of the time based in Alvaston hall hotel. A Warner hotel. Adults only and set up for the elderly and those challenged by life. I am both of those, but it caters for’normal’ folk too, so the wife enjoys it. I would highly recommend Warner as a cheaper version of a cruise, without the sea.

As I meandered slowly about it gave me time to ponder life’s richness and humour. Our chambermaid was Vietnamese. A delightful young woman who we discovered was called A. Just like the letter. I found myself admiring the elegant simplicity of her name as I compared it with the strange spelling often employed by minor celebrities to set them apart. I wondered idly if she had 3 brothers, called C,D and E. 4 children . A,C,D and E.

Those moving at speed immediately spot the anomaly, or mistake, and ask me in a challenging way. “What about B?”

In my lugubrious slow and sloth like way I reply. “She had 3 brothers. I thought everyone knew B is a girl’s name!”

Under the apologetic and enigmatic smile I’m laughing fit to burst. I find life is full of these moments if you look for them.

So what animal are you like?

Nigel

I've thought of myself as an owl! I do not know why they are called wise old owls, but I claim both those adjectives for myself. One does not see owls walking about either. They either sit and watch, or swoop down for a meal. OK, perhaps my swooping days are over, but I can sill think, watch and eat.

Ataxia may be a disease, in my case of the cerebellum, but, as Nigel's post shows, it does not impair the cognitive process, or the sense of humour.

Too true. Today I am wearing a tee shirt which says 'I tried to be normal once--- Worst two minutes of my life!' I like to raise a laugh!

I'm 75, and I stagger around the place, either with stick, or a rollator. There is a wheelchair lurking in the garage, but it can continue to lurk, it's too hilly here to use it as my wrists and arms aren't strong.

Will probably go for a electric mobility scooter soon.

Cheers, Midori

Thanks for making me smile Nigel.I love your analogy and humour.

I feel like a chimpanzee and wish my grab bars could be suspended from ceiling. Having said that, my greatest fear is missing the bar so a moving strap would be challenging.

If only my arms were long enough to walk like a chimpanzee.

I would say I'm like a tortoise. Slowly does it but gets there eventually!

I agree; I even have a job keeping up with snails!

🙂 I’ve never been to a Warner Hotel…but I’d definitely consider it. It sounds a comfortable place for a Sloth (I’m elderly and challenged) 😉

I went to a Premier Inn once and had a disabled room with my son (carer!) Comfortable, not too expensive, good breakfast!

Hahaha, I love your posts Nigel. I didn't even notice that the B was missing 🤦🏼‍♀️.

I think a tortoise is now too fast for me, so I'd have to be a sloth too.

We have chickens and I've noticed that if it's me who goes out to feed them, they adjust their pace to mine and we toddle (though that word may exaggerate my speed) together. Bless them
