The start of my ataxia symptoms coincided with the onset of Menopause, and I was very confused..

But Gastric reflux is mentioned quite frequently among members of ataxia support groups, I have problems with this myself. Recently it was severe, and resulted in Bronchospasms..I needed a course of antibiotics to get relief.

It could have nothing to do with Ataxia. My son, who does not have it, had to go trough a long line of specialist with problems such as yours and after several years finally had a diagnosis in Estonia of a too long and sagging intestine. He had an operation to shorten it which was very invasive. His pain and discomfort has gone and he is now recuperating.

Hi Tazwaz. My mom has spinocerebella ataxia cause unknown. She has a further rare brain condition (no name for it) and has lost her speech so she cannot express to me verbally what exactly she feels but she definitely suffers with stomach problems. She went through menopause in her early 40s and didn't develop ataxia until in her 50s so not menopause related. She definitely suffers with severe cramps and stomach issues. She is prescribed Omeprazole (Losec mups) to help with stomach acid. Mebeverine which is liquid buscopan. Maalox with simeticone (which is like gaviscon and windeze). We also buy and use Biokult Boosted probiotic (read up on the micriobiome and stomach, very useful). All of these help but she still gets cramps now and again. She is allergic to orange favouring and certain fruits (she is nil by mouth but if we flavour her thickened water to wet her lips with certain squashes then she gets a bad stomach). She has not been able to have exploratory tests done as she has epilepsy which can be sensory triggered and she is bed bound so hospital stays are very unconfortable. Her stomach problems also cause her to have seizures. We have found that when the cramps are very severe that if she has 1 Loperamide Hydrochloride tablet (diarrhoea relief) then the cramps will settle within 10 minutes. If you read the medication leaflet though it does say not to use them too often as can affect the heart, or have them with tonic water, or not to use them if you do not have diarrhoea but we find they are very effective and though there maybe side effects to watch out for it is better to use them then to see her having seizures all night long and then her becoming exhausted and have more seizures from that. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you x

Hi TazwazJust wondering if you are still suffering with digestive issues or have they improved?

Have you tried going gluten free?

You need to follow a strict diet for a while, about a month should see improvement and if you still have problems then consider eliminate dairy too.

I know this is difficult to stick to but could help considerably and can sometimes help.

A word of caution - ask your doctor if you do this very restrictive diet for long for obvious reasons.

Good luck
