Hi it’s a long time since I’ve posted a question on here. I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid earlier this year so that’s taken all my time but now I have a new question. When do you know it’s time to move to a wheelchair. I can manage in a fashion round the house but stumble a lot, only fell a hand full of times. Outside is a different kettle of fish. I can manage round the supermarket with a trolley. Walking round my village I have a Walker. I try every other day to walk with my partner but find it very hard much prefer my buggy. I go out to my garage every day and pedal 3 mins on my exercise bike. Do I wait till my legs won’t carry me and totally unable to walk? I wrote earlier this year asking for advice and found the issue was my thyroid so that is much better although not cured yet. I use a walking stick but find I can only use it for a few steps. I don’t want to have a wheelchair until I really have to but would like the advice from my friends on here. I’m retired now so no longer have to work. Louise xx

Hi,i would suggest you enjoy walking for as long as you can.I am at a stage now where i need my 4 wheel walker all the time i don't drive any more as i lose my balance when trying to get the walker in the boot.i live alone so only get out at weekends when my kids can come over.My condition has deteriorated rapidly over last year.Take Care.
This is a question we all ask. I would say try and walk as much as possible without taking any risks The main risk is falling badly and doing serious damage to your body
Once you get used to a scooter you can get out and about in the fresh air (and rain!!) and hopefully you will be quite safe There are numerous exercises you can do in a wheel chair without falling over
Keep safe and good luck. Ted
I have lost a lot bc of weight
Asked for a blood test hopinh they will review the medications I am taking for bc diabetes
No
Added more. Overactive thyroid
Take 30 mg oh carbimazole twice a day propranolol 10mg 2 tablets three times
They said if not diagnosed and treated I will have an irregular heartbeat and weak heart
Well here to more tablets
It’s something we each have to judge for ourselves really. Just remember that just because you have it doesn’t mean that you have to use it in every situation. If you feel comfortable with a buggy you can still use one when it’s there. A UPWalker might also be a good idea because they are more upright than a regular rollator.
