Hi all, hope your all looking forward to spring which is just round the corner now. I am to be assessed for a Lycra suit tomorrow, I was just wondering if any of you wear such a suit. I know this has been discussed before but I can't find the info on the site. While researching Lycra I can't find any definitive results as to the effectiveness in patients with Ataxia whatever the cause. I'm looking for your experience and opinions of using the products.
Thank-you for your help.

The Lycra vests help increase core stability and according to limited research which I have read can help reduce ataxia movements and therefore increase mobility.
I'm unsure if they are available to buy, to the best of my knowledge they BUS provides them if criteria is met you would then be measured by a specially trained physio to ensure correct fit.
My partner, 62 yrs old, who has Ataxia Cellebellar, recently bought an OT - Vest (google) from USA and has weights which helps him with his balance. He has only started wearing it for about less than 2 weeks.
Thanks for your feed back, how your husband gets on well with the vest and weights. The physio decided the best way forward would be to try shorts for 2 weeks then if I'm happy measure me up for my own pair.I've also been given ankle supports to eear. Thanks again.
Leona, my partner is trying a mat - Shakti - like a bed of pins..and the effect is like accupuncture...and it has been known to stimulate the nervous system. It is called a Shakti mat. (google).
🙂 I tried an OT VEST out at a NAF Convention a couple of years ago, at the time I didn’t buy one, but I did like it, I felt more ‘grounded’ due to the weights across the shoulders. 🙂xB
🙂 There is evidence that specially fitted garments can increase sensation in many conditions, including types of Cerebellar Ataxia. Search ‘Sensory Dynamic Orthosis’ 🙂xB
Thanks I'll have a look on line. The Lycra items will be supplied by the NHS. I look forward to searching Sensory Dynamo Orthosis sounds interesting. In the meantime I'm hoping the rain stays off long enough for me to go to the shop using my scooter which I've not used for weeks.
Thanks for suggesting this search it came up with a few interesting sites. Sounds as if the Lycra is worth giving a go, 2 physios will measure me so the items will fit well. Thanks again.
