Hi there All

Well - I am in Cape Town South Africa - was diagnosed with Ataxia in 2012 - been on my own ever since - and now certainly starting to battle - we do not have many if any support systems here- I am trying to get support from a Council - but is seems obvious and nobody can answer it seems - here or anywhere - my Question I have been thrown with is

1) Is Ataxia curable

2) Is Ataxia terminal (duration if any) I have seen various articles - indicating sadly - it seems from Age 50 onwards it really gets tough -

Help Advice if You able and want to lol

It will be whatever you make it, remember you might have ataxia but ataxia doesn't have you. I am seventy years old but I refuse to be defined by ataxia. Be as strong as you can, good luck.

Hi there so sorry you have very little support, to answer to your qùestions I am afraid ataxia is not curable it is a progressive condition learning to manage the symptoms is important and physio is important I believe 😀Good Luck (this forum is also vert helpful)

Unfortunately it is not curable and is degenerative, but do not give up, keep moving. I do physiotherapy, I know someone who does cycling. Exercise certainly helps to slow it down. I live in Portugal, there is alot of research going on, but no treatment. I am 65 still managing well, I am walking unaide at home, a bit scared when out, so I hold on to somebody. Ataxia is not terminal, keep positive, exercise and focus on what you can do and celebrate those achievements not on you can not do. Think of it as doing things differently. I also come from South Africa, I grew up in the Transvaal.

I am also being treated by a homepath and his medicine is helping a bit, it is slowing the process down.

Keeep cheerful

Isabel

Hi 🙂 Log onto Facebook, and search for Spinocerebellar Ataxia Awareness & Research Group. You’ll be able to make contact with a member of a South Africa Support Group 🙂 xB

Hi Sablelodge.

You have been given useful info to help you along the way, I was diognosed back in 2003..... you learn to adjust, do whatever you can, take it one day a time.

While indoors, I get around holding on to furniture, walls and doorframes, but still fall over sometimes, when I go out I use an electric wheelchair.

I wish you well for the future. 😀🌞

Actually it is said that ataxia is not curable . But I DON'T BELIEVE THAT .When a problem is given by GOD ,it is said a solution would also be given . Modern medicine does not have solutions for many diseases because their cure centers round symptomatic cure only rather than searching for root cause and attending to that . Find a good homeopathic doctor who is committed to his profession who would take up your case . In the mean while you can take Arnica 30 c , Gingkobiloba -mother tincture , Belladona 30c cuprum 30c daily twice . A dose is 2 pills . Mother tincture , --- you can have 5 drops in an ounce of water . I assure you that it would give no untoward result . But it is a question of time . you can't expect over night results . It wold definitely take at least two to three years , changing the medicines depending upon the need . That's why I advised you to contact a committed homeopathic doctor . Homeopathy has beautiful cures for many diseases . Alternatively you can contact a homeopathic research center .
