Dear Louise, I was diagnosed with Sporadic Cerebellar Ataxia (unknown cause, progressive, symptoms 24/7) thirteen years ago, although I had very minor symptoms starting about eight years before diagnosis. I worked for about three years with my symptoms after I was diagnosed, but as they got progressively worse, I retired from my job of 28 years. Please be more specific about the advice that you need and how your illness effects you...,my best to you..., ;o)

Dear Louise, Were you diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia? I assume you were, as you say you don't have much of a cerebellum (atrophy of the cerebellum is a sign of ataxia, which I have). Can you apply for disability, as you say your job is getting to be a chore. I live in the USA and assume (?) you live in the UK. If so, I know disability is different there. Maybe someone who lives in the UK will answer and guide you, although you didn't say where you live. Anyway, the advice I can give is to stay as active (safely) as possible. I do exercises for strength and balance, holding onto something sturdy (you can even do exercises while sitting in a chair), unless I'm lying on the floor (look online). Try to eat a healthy as possible (lots of veggies and fruit), no processed food and very little sugar unless it's natural (like sugar in fruit). My best to you..., ;o)

Atrophy of the cerebellum of the brain is loss of neurons and the connections between them (causing the gait/balance/uncoordination, dexterity, speech, swallowing and vision problems I have with my ataxia).

I'm ill-health retired. Couldn't do my job & safety is a factor too. Maybe look into this. You can still work but restricted hours I think. Good luck.
