Yes I have really bad reflux and bloating and my gp prescribed omeprazole which really helps.

Yes but do you know why u have this??

I was told it's because the messages aren't getting through the nervous system to shut the top of the gut up when you've eaten so causing reflux. And the bloating is due to having problems with my bowels. Hope this helps.

Dear Daisychain,

Thanks for getting back 2 me. Could it be a "gluten" thing? N

Mines definitely not as I've been genetically tested and have a rare ataxia called spastic ataxia type 1. But a lot of neurological conditions have problems with the gut and bowels. Good luck and I hope you get the answers you need

Is this an answer to Neta? If so, it is unclear to me.

I have digestive issues. They seem to be worse sometimes and at other times not too bad.

I have wind from both ends. I never used to burp! I have trouble going to do a poo, but they have discovered that my sphincter contracts. It feels like it doesnt know what to do! I get pains in my intestines from time to time, which I think is muscle spasms.

I have change my diet a little. Only brown rice, not too much pasta.

I have discussed with both my gp and neurologist. No one can say if it's the illness as we don't know which type of ataxia I have but is quite likely. In my mind it def is.

sorry I don't have any advice to give you on how to deal with it. Except eat well. Lots of fruit and veg

good luck 🍀. If you find a solution please let me know

love

Alison

Dear Alison

Thanks for your interesting response. I havent asked anyone yet. (Ignore the italics) . I was thinking maybe they erred all along and its gluten ataxia because the last major regurgitation episode occurred after eating cottage cheese tomato and toast. Heavy on the toast. Dunno, just a thought. LN

Hi Neta,

I've had ongoing digestive problems since I was 18 - I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome ( in other words, they don't know why ! ) I have tried going gluten free with no discernible difference. I have noticed that my bloating/constipation/accident issues do seem to follow a pattern during the course of my monthly menstrual cycle. I've tried double dose Senna tablets/suppositories with little long term success - my bowel will unspasm when it is ready. I often live off a liquid diet during this painful phase. I do find Gaviscon liquid ( an antacid ) can help with the reflux and bloating. At times my throat has got painfully swollen and burning with severe reflux, making swallowing difficult. Remaining upright for a while after eating is recommended, as is sleeping with head elevated ( lots of pillows so your body is more upright ). There are many gluten free products available in the UK - hopefully you could seek out some where you are, worth a try ? Tomatoes are noted for their acidity so not necessarily the bread that caused a problem. Natural products I know of are Peppermint Tea ( it sure works - makes me belch repeatedly like a frog ! ) for wind and ginger ( tea/biscuits etc ) for nausea. Liquorice for constipation. It may just be that you have slow motility due to nerves not working as well as they should so food is not passing through as quickly as normal and fermenting, causing bloating, or the valve on top of stomach is not shutting properly, allowing stomach contents to travel back up the oesophagus. Experiment to find what helps you and see your GP if it is getting very troublesome. Angela x

Dear Neta, I have acid reflux and did not have that before I was diagnosed with ataxia. I have no way of knowing if they're related, but my opinion is they are (everything runs slower I suspect). I take Prilosec (30 days on/4 months off, which is the directions on the box)) which has really helped. I also use Miralax and a fiber (generic) mix every night (I mix a capful of Miralax and a TBLS of fiber mix in 5 ounces of warm water and add a bit of orange juice for taste) to stay regular. My doctor said I can use this daily. My best to you..., ;o)

Dear February, I had an answer 4 u and it just vanished. I blame my crazy computer. Well, thanks anyway 4 your answer. I imagine the Miralax and fiber helps with constipation issues. Why do all these "joyous" events happen to us?

Dear Neta, I think with ataxia our systems run slow and our muscles/nerves are effected, which controls alot of bodily functions, like swallowing/digestion, etc. Just my opinion but makes sense to me, as I don't even know my body anymore...My best to you..., ;o)

I have bad indigestion problems and went to my doctor who gave me laxido to soften my stools and omeprazole for indigestion which I take once a day.I take the laxido every 2nd day. I get on not too badly when at home and I don't eat anything too rich but sometimes have problems when eating out. I am on a gluten free diet which seems to help and I try not to eat after about 7 in the evening.

I have cerebellar syndrome with possible MSA.

I hope this is helpful but it is a case of trial and error as we're all different. Dairy is another no no for me especially anything with cream in it but I find the shops are better these days.

Good luck with your problems! Rankin63
