Daily Exercise

When do people feel is the best time to exercise each day? My Specialist says that the afternoon is best as your lung efficiency increases by up to 20% compared to the morning. I feel this is probably true as I can exercise more comfortably (still puff though) in the pm. How about you?

I can only exercise on an empty stomach, so early lunch and late afternoon exercise for me! Aren't you supposed to puff when execising? I was told if I didn't I wasn't doing it right.

Hi Always. Ah! Ha! but it is the degree of Puffing. On the Borg 10 scale its about 6-7. Keep well. Martin

What an odd thing for your specialist to say. The best time from the point of view of your lungs will mostly depend on when you get up and when you take your meds. My 'best time' is roughly between 10am and whatever time I eat lunch. After lunch I am useless for an hour or so and then get another hour or two when I am ok. As I generally get up some time between six and seven, I guess for me it is roughly around 3 - 4 hours after taking my Symbicort and Spiriva - by then they have 'kicked in' fully. I have also recovered from those awful early morning symptoms and my joints are feeling pretty mobile by then. In the morning I do stretches followed by indoor aerobic walking - the most intense part of the day - and in the afternoons I have a slower walk to the supermarket and back - roughly a mile. If it rains I stay indoors and do a few short sessions of 2 or 3 minutes on the exercise bike (get saddle sore if I do more :(

There is some evidence that copd patients are better in the afternoon as many patients spend much of the morning clearing their chest and pulling themselves together.

I would recommend you exercise when you have the motivation and the time. Do something you enjoy!

I can only do mornings also. If I don't exercise before lunch, I've got no chance after eating anything as I'm too SOB after eating for the rest of the day. I have to do everything in the morning.

Mornings for me. I am up by 7 or earlier, have breakfast and am ready to exercise for about 9. By afternoon, I can't be bothered unless its working at the allotment.

I'm lucky as I don't have to clear my lungs.

I do mornings because thats when I did it at PR, the nurse told me 1/2 hour aerobic exercise each day 5 days a week so I do 5 minutes on each one. Then I have my breakfast and get on with other chores.

Hi Kim, i am 45. And was diagnosed with COPD about three years ago. I was. Just wondering what exercises you do, as I'm not sure what I can do. I have been pretty unwell since Xmas and am badly out of condition, but know I need to exercise. I also had a chest infection 2 weeks ago and although the antibiotics have mainly cleared it up, I am still coughing up more than usual. I have emphysema so that's par for the course I suppose. I'm also on long term oxygen therapy. The truth is any exercise makes me breathless, but I have to try. Do you know how I can get back into shape, gradually? Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks x

You're hopeless!! Good luck.

Hi Martin,

I always go for the evening slot - i have had my meals for the day, so its a blast on the Inhalers and off i go - find it helps with the weight gain, and if i have a good session i sleep like a brick
