Hi I've just been reading on here that sitting down to long can cause blood clots in your legs. I am more or less chair bound as my sats drop dramatic as soon as I do anything fiscal. Has any one got any good exercise advice for me and other chair bound can.Thanking you in advance and I hope you are coping as best you. Harry

You should start to walk or even stand until you are breathless and keep it up on a daily basis and eventually you will be able to do it for longer. If really chair bound then raise each leg leg in turn for as long as you can. You will build up your tolerance for exercise which will in turn improve your circulation. Keep moving , this is important and don' t give up, this will take time.

Have you looked on YouTube, they have all manner of exercises on there, I'd be surprised if there aren't any for seated exercises. Also, I don't know how effective they are but there are small pedal 'machines' that can pedalled while seated and those vibrating footplate things which are supposed to be very good, but they're rather expensive. Any kind of movement counts as exercise though, it's just important to do it regularly and 'when you're well enough' to, do it until you're breathless as 2greys says. You can start slowly though especially if you haven't had any exercise for a while.

I have a 'pedaler' as I call it. They are great as you can alter resistance on it as you get to use it more. It got me going where strength and energy was concerned after a long bout of enforced sitting around last year. It took me a long time to understand that being breathless to a point on exercising wasn't a bad thing. Up to that point I was frightened to get breathless so put off exercising. No win situation! I'm sure it got me out and about again and walking. Because I can't cope with cold and windy conditions and have found myself staying indoors much too often again lately I have just got it out again. You can use it watching tv etc it's great. I also do upper body exercises as I suffered muscle wastage and you can use the pedaler for that too.

That sounds good, must admit I don't get out as much as I should when it's cold and damp but I try to stay as active as usual while I'm indoors - not as good as getting a bit of fresh air but better than nothing. I reckon going up and down the stairs is a pretty good exercise for indoors and I have dumbells handy for when I'm watching the telly. Now that you've got your pedlar out I suggest you keep it out, and start peddling.

Thank you for your reply Annie31 I like you have not been outside my front door since early last year. I'm 77 and I really must make an effort when it gets warmer. H

I have been to seated exercise classes,.....could you see your health professional and ask what would be best for you.

Just flexing your feet while sitting can help or ankle turns, but please get checked first to see what's safe for you.

If you have beans in your cupboard they are good for arm lifts instead of dumb bells. As said seeing your GP for sitting exercises or a class they can send you on my father 85 a went on a cardiac rehab course and they did lots of specific exercises for sitting. All the best
