What does it mean when people talk about "exacerbations" and "flare ups"? Sorry if I seem a bit of a dimwit.

Quite simply, exacerbation means a worsening or a "flare up" of COPD. It can take on mnay forms, but is usually something that needs treating, usually with antibiotics.

Common signs are changes in colour and quantity of sputum and an increased shortness (shouldn't that be decreased ?) of breath.

Thanks Gordon

I guess I must be lucky. Although my emphysema is classed as moderate/ severe I get very few "flare ups". Thanks again.

Just trying to say 'exacerbation' can bring them on :) I get out of breath that easily sometimes.

I forgot to say earlier, there are no daft questions here...

Hi Caroll

I was stage 3. I am now stage 4 Moderate/severe. So I haven't gone downhill as much as I thought I would. I became stage 4 about 4 years ago. I hope this helps.

I have heard good reports of Seebri from some on this site. The Elkira I don't know a lot about. I have got a really good GP now and he keeps me going ok. I'm glad you stopped the smoking. Its the best thing you can do. I smoked for 55 years and look what it got me. If I can help with anything else just give me a shout.
