Why is it so?

I can ride 10 kms on my bike without too much of a hassle but weeding the garden is another matter even if my upper body is straight, thereby not applying pressure to my diaphragm.

Swap for a push-bike and see if you can still do 10km Martin... :)

Life is cruel when you have a lung disease. Any exertion makes us feel the pain, get short of breath, cut back the effort. It's just our bodies trying to remind us that we have damage and this is how it protects itself, stopping you doing anything that could put a strain on the affected parts.

It amazes me how quickly I feel it now, just by walking a few steps. There does not seem to be any logic in getting so short of breath, but it happens. Often.

Hi Gordon, Hmmm as I live in a hilly area a pushbike is definitely out. I tried it once (borrowed my daughter's bike) and ended up walking everywhere it wasn't dead flat LOL.

Hi Martin

I am the same. I can swim a kilometre, get out the pool and be utterly exhausted just getting dried and dressed! Same when i go to the gym, the treadmill is fine but then getting changed back into my work clothes I'm bushed again. I don't think there is any pattern to it - its wone of those odd things you have when suffering from a lung disease!

The feeling of hard work and breathlessness that comes with my getting dressed / undressed gets worse, wonder if it has anything to do with the using of shoulder and back muscles, that I use for breathing, having to do something as well as breath ? Seems that when I use my arms I get breathless - any comment ?

Hi, I am the same lately, having had repeated episodes of being SOB, getting dry from bath or dressed is an effort going up stairs is a struggle too, have had 3 lots of amox and steriods in 9 weeks, up until 3 months ago I felt quite well but now I find if I am stressed out over something it makes feel lousy for ages, the only time I feel at peace is when I am resting or sleeping, I am waiting for results of xray last week, just hope this is not the desease progressing, I am 62 and diagnosed 5 years ago.

I can do really well on the treadmill, but not in the street, although I am improving.

I can walk on the flat but get SOB when going up hill or climbing up steps. The thing that gets me is I cough and cough when I get SOB if I didn't cough so much I think I could a bit more walking outside but I get so embarrassed by the cough I prefer to stay at home.

I cough a lot but have done for many years. It doesn't bother me so much now peoples reactions. If I do cough somewhere and someone (a little old lady usually) gives me a terrified look and scurries away I say 'its all right dearie you aren't going to catch anything - I only have COPD'. Then I smile to myself! I have even had some good conversations with strangers over this. Don't let it stop you going out - its not your fault - brazen it out.
