We used to get a Met Office phone call to warn of bad weather. I asked my respitorary nurse why we didn't get one any more and she said they had stopped doing this as it wasn't proved that it was any benefit.

Hi Caroleoctober

The Met Office still offer the service but it now depends on the PCT that you live in as to whether (no pun intended) you can get the service.

The following link from the Met Office discusses this services and say's the alerts 'Save Lives'.
