cold weather blues

The weather has been really cold now and it makes breathing as hard as a hot humid day. I'm feeling drab and not wanting to do my exercises. I do my cardio three days a week and only ten minutes on the off days. I'm just not feeling it right now. I know its the weather, my slightly stuffy head, the extra weight, etc but I don't like it. Anyone else having trouble with the blues and not wanting do anything right now?

omg Bobbi--I could have wrote that--Awful time--I have emphysema--this is my first cold weather since Ive been on O2--I really thought cool weather would help breathing--I feel like iM suffocating--It is frightening--I do stuff and just huff and puff and end up laying down in front of tv most of day--I gained 40 lbs when I quit smoking and im very depressed about it--My pulmonary Dr thinks I should have that bariatric surgery--they do it with robotics now--He said would really help my breathing--I cant even think about any kind of exercise--I have all I can do to do sdishes --I have a -fib too--although I think that is better--I had chf too but that is better too--Quitting smoking dam near killed me--It was covering up a lot--Im thankful to be alive but I swear some days are very sad and depressing for me so you are not alone--MmeT--- I also have the stuffy head and have sone 4 rounds of antibitotics to little avail--Having a canula up my nose doesn't help--are you on O2? I see you are in U.S. too....

Hi madametobacco49. I'm so glad your no longer a smoker and I wish you well. I do use O2 and live in the U.S. I've made a lot of progress but every winter I get set back to square one. This year I want to be different. I may not be able to get outside and exercise but I'm staying in cardio as long as they will keep me. Then I plan to spend the $40 a month to workout in their wellness center. I'm hoping this makes a difference for me. I take anti-depressants and so I hope this will all help. My cardio instructor said to do as much as I can even days i feel bad and I'll pull through it better. I'm going to listen to her and if all else fails I'll something else to blame other than myself. LOL! thanks for sharing that you know how I feel. means a lot!

Bobbi-my pulmonary dr recommends I participate in the pulmonary/cardio workouts at wellness center too--but 60.00 for 12--I don't know if I can swing it--and id like to join the wellness center here also--I kno this extra weight is awful hard on my heart and breathing--so I have work to do --my car just broke down so im not able to get anywhere at present--It has been quite a year and a half--what do you do in cardio? does it help? Have you made some friends? I live alone and get so lonely=-I think that is detrimental too--you just sink sometimes--MmeT r u in northern plains of U.S. I wonder cuz you mention wellness center-- but they may havem all over

madametobacco49, I live in Pennsylvania. The wellness center here I was told is $40 a month plus an initiation fee. I can't afford not to go even though I really can't afford the cost either. I do have a treadmill and recombent bike at home that I use but I'm not committed enough on my own. I too am overweight. Hate it! However if you can't do a lot of exercise and don't have the will power to eat smaller portions, then the weight doesn't come off. My insurance covers some cardio/pulmonary rehab per year so I do that every chance I get.

What do I do in Cardio you ask? I do 11 min on a treadmill, 11 min on a recumbent bike, 11 min on a nustep machine. Do you have any equipment at home you can use? If not you'd be wise to invest in atleast one of those items. We have a lot in common. Best wishes to you!

It's getting cold in the UK too, usually it's cold, overcast and damp which is horrible (like today in South West England). Prefer it colder, dry and sunny.

As to exercise, there are lots of YouTube clips and so many ways to adjust most exercises to do from a chair or sofa. I just ensure my bott is higher than knees so as not to put strain on lower back.

When I'm in couch potato mode I set an alarm on mobile phone (cell), an hourly reminder to get moving, twisting, reaching, marching on the spot whilst sitting. Got lots of tunes on the phone for 3 minute dance (I'm very lucky, not on O2 and normally quite active). The main thing is to get the serotonin going, this is like taking a happy drug, lovely mood lift & helps you get going even more.

Stay warm and well. Peege

Thank you Peege. Guess the key is to move whether you feel like it or not. Sometimes I think I have to do all or nothing but that shouldn’t be the case.

Hi Peegee and Bobbi--Peegee I love the phone idea--Bobbi, I do have a treadmill--I tell ya this weight is killin me--makes my breathin so much harder--Wellness Center is about 60 a month here--I am in South Dakota--My problem is my car went kaput--so cant get around till I get another one but Im going to probably do wellness when I get wheels again--I think I can handle 11 minutes on treadmill--although this a.m took garbage out--an ached so bad till about 1 o'clock--was just about cryin--Guess you have to push thru--but steps are not my enemy--I have fibromyalgia too so that doesn't help--Im going to start Monday--using phone and treadmill--Be sure and ask me--lol--MmeT

Hi madametobacco it’s Monday. You get on that treadmill yet. No incline just flat for 10 or 11 min. 3 min walking really slow the rest at speed you can handle. You can do it girl!!!!

hi madametobacco. Day is almost over. How did it go?? I got my workout in at Cardio. Today was hard. I was in the ER last night for confusion and fainting so I did not want to work out today. I pushed myself b/c it was safe to do so at Rehab and I'm glad I did. Makes you feel so much better. funny how I can exercise there pretty good and at home but walking from the door to my car nearly kills me. Oh well. the exercise is suppose to help me with that in the long run. Best of luck to you friend.

Hi Bobbi--I didn't do treadmill today--A friend got groceries for me and I had to carry them upstairs and down the hall--My back and legs just kill me with this fibro--what happened to you last night? That is scarey--I live alone so if I fainted Id probably lay here forever-I will get on treadmill tomorrow--I don't see how it can help--today just walking to the kitchen my legs and back killin me and seems my breathing is worse lately--I thought it would get better with cooler weather--I have spells of wheezing and runny nose too--and sneeze sometimes 10 times in a row--so loud the cat hides-I napped 2 times today so will be awake at 4 am and then I lay there--I make myself stay in bed till 6--just in case--I fall back to sleep--Hope your evening goes well--Tv gets so old when you watch it a lot and I do--hugs--Mmet
