coughing fit

hi all when i have a coughing fit i go very dizzy and feel as if im going to pass out is this normal for copd

Prolonged coughing can make you short of breath and being short of breath (or of oxygen) can make you a bit dizzy so that could be the cause but if you are feeling dizzy and as though you are going to pass out the best thing to do is either ask your doctor/nurse about it or ring the BLF for some advice because there are other things that can cause this too.

hi annrotherham, i also nearly black out after a really good cough, my doc says its shortage of oxygen but it can be scary

Did have bit of a bark with the fags that was that way not so bad now they are packed in

I have passed out a few times coughing during the night when waking and having a cough. Only blacked out for seconds but long enough to damage myself. If driving pull in don't take the chance.

hi annrotherham, I have CODP and understand fully with coughing fits. I have mentioned this to my respitory Nurse and basically when you have a coughing fit you are coughong so much that you are not taking in any oxygen If you have one when sitting down wait until you are happy that you breathing is ok If you are standing say in the kitchen hold on to something until the fit stops then sit down for a while. Hoe this helps you,
