Chest Infection

I started on my emergency Antibiotics Steroids and mucus tablets today, I didn't feel great yesterday had a bit of a temperature woke up first thing with a pain down my ribs at the back. My consultant said early intervention was the key as I have just got over three months of Pnuemonia.

Hope I've done right any advice.

I used to think that my hubby ought to wait until he really needed his 'sweeties' but experience has taught me to catch it early, so as soon as he looks poorly antibiotics and up his steroids to 6 a day for 2 weeks. We also sent a sputum sample into the surgery before starting these as sometimes the bug he catches does not respond to the antibiotics we keep at home.

You sound as though you are doing the right thing, keep your chin up

Precisely so, as your doc says early intenvention IS the key to preventing further health complications and lung damage. This goes for anyone with already damaged lungs. Well done for acting straight away.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks for the advice. The pain has gone for now thank god and my temperature seems to have subsided but I've started so I finish as I still don't feel 100%.

Had a lot of worry with my poor dog Eric, we noticed a lump under his chin sunday that burst that night, to the vet the following day and had to wait 24 hours to see if the huge antibiotic injection bucked him up, if it did it was a cyst if not it was a tumour. Thankfully he bucked up much to the vets amazement who expected him not to be here for the last two years because of his arthritic legs he's 14 and apparently Borders only live to about 12, so that was all very stressful. xxx

I think u definitely did the right thing, i too became ill like you - it was at the weekend so i started my emergency antibiotics, didnt take the preds as breathing wasnt so bad. The one thing i was told when i phoned my gp to tell him about my situation, was he told me to try and get a sputum sample a.s.a.p. to send to the lab, to make sure that the antibiotics i was using were ok , sincerely hope you feel better soon - Janie xx

Hi, if your GP agrees that you need to send a sample in, ask if you can keep spare pots and forms at home so that you can get one into them first thing in the morning. We did this and have 3 pots and forms, has made life a bit easier. Hope you are on the mend now.

You defo did the right thing. As SonconLife says best to get a samle in. However I would check with docs what time the van collects the samples. My GP says it's best to get a sample from first thing in the morning, but when I asked him what time the van came - about 4-5pm. The bugs don't last more than a few hours outside the body and you may get a false negative back. I do physio about 3pm and get it down if well enough.

Good luck
