Regarding the E cigarette, there has been reports of the safety of this and apparently the long term effects are not known, the link below is from the BBC News website which cites research from Greece.
Are you currently trying to stop smoking? We have some good information on stopping smoking and there are forum members who have been through it and some who are going through it.
Thankyou ,i have been looking about on here and yes there is lots advice and support wish i joined long ago, yes i still am smoking, i have tried every thing, but only cut down,i gave up for 2weeks this time last year when i was in hospital with Pneumonia which would have been the best time for me to not smoke soon as i was out of hospital, but the habit quickly come back, im quite upset with myself for doing that, but i still keep trying
Thanx for the link i will take a look in a mo,also read up on forums..looks like im in for a busy night
I have tried patches, chewing gum, nicotine spray and the little white plastic inhalers none of these have been effective in getting me to kick the habit, after 6 months on the E-ciggie I have not used any tobacco and am now using the lower level nicotine re-fill hopefully will stop entirely soon but I find I still need it to stop me using tobacco tried several, the one I use now is nicolites, if there is any harm from them it is certainly less than tobacco..!
Thanx sylb, i keep trying every day i wake up. i say to myself ,dont light the 1st one of the day yet, im getting longer n longer each day before i do,
I went to a smoking cessation nurse on the NHS,she said for me definatly not to use e cigs(still got some somewhere if anyone wants them lol),she said and I have read quite alot about them not being fully tried and tested, so not sure what long term effects it causes, the nurse put me on Champix,I went to see her every week for 12 weeks, she would talk to me and I would talk to her all of which helped in the quitiing ,I was on Champix a bit longer than most,I had smoked for just over 40yrs !!!!!,but I did stop smoking,I smoked round about 40 a day and thought I would never be able to stop, but the Champix made it easy plus with COPD I would be shortening my life considerably if I had continued on 40 a day,I have now been cigarette free for just over 7mths,my breath smells fresh,my clothes,my house, think I have just about washed every inch of nicotine stain from window surrounds, pictures etc,I`m richer in many ways.
Why not ask your GP or respirotary nurse if you have a smoking cessation nurse in your area.
In answer to having copd, yes I was diagnosed 7 month ago, with following building work all over the country I never had a GP, just used walk in centres where ever I was, after collapsing at work decided it was time to register, after stopping smoking and getting the right medication I am getting much better and I am thinking of going back to work, the benefits that are on offer nowadays are not enough to keep a large dog, after paying tax at he highest rate for twenty years, smoking has not helped my condition but who knows what I have breathed in over the years it is only recently that health and safety has become paramount, when I first started one of my jobs was "Chase the Ball" wrecking balls got stuck inside a building had to go into half demolished building and guide it out, fecking dangerous..!
Hi, I have used a e-cig since September when i went to the doctors after chest xray showed all clear. I had a cough for months and was SOB. Doctor has had me on numerous inhalers, antibiotics (3 courses) and Steroids (3 courses). I have been a smoker for 45 years. After lung function test hes suggested moderate COPD. I have a appointment with a specialist at the end of Nov.
going back to the e-cig I have found this very effective. so much i might now only have 1 or 2 puffs in the evening! I had tried all other nicotine replacements in the past and failed.
I was a smoker who lit up with coffee (didn't do breakfast) stood outside with umbrella when raining to get a "fix". and even lit up if i woke up in the night. I smoked 25 per day.
as for still getting the nicotine from the e-cigs isn't it the same with patches sprays, gum, lozenges etcetc.
Hi try setting a date when you will stop in the meantime every time you have a ciggie say to yourself every ciggie shortens my life and will make my copd worse I know how hard it is I gave up when diagnosed with copd with help of patches and plastic ciggie my son quit with e-cigs good luck
After reading the comments made here, these e-cigs may be OK for some who want to carry on getting the buzz, but for anyone with a lung condition to consider inhaling something that isn't even tested is as bad as smoking to me. Who knows what is in the vapour, especially with them coming in from all over the world.
Having been helped to stop by NHS Smokefree myself, I wonder why they don't promote the e-cigs as a way of cutting down or doing less harm? Probably because there is insufficient research into what they contain. Will they end up having health warning on the packets too ?
I briefly tried e cigs but worried about the unknown risks. The one thing that helped me stop was Champix and the smoking cessation clinic. Champix does not have nicotine in it and they tell you not to have nicotine replacement whilst on it.
I think that helped me a lot as its the nicotine that keeps pulling you back to cigarettes. After 2 weeks on Champix, cigs tasted vile. I've been off them for over 10 months now.
I have tried every possible stop smoking aid. Patches made my heart race, little tabs burnt my mouth `cos of the thrush, Champix gave me pneumonia (read the leaflet), inhalater worsened my asthma, hypnosis didn`t work and the E-Cig put me in hospital. I have asthma and severe COPD so I guess it`s going to have to be cold turkey and willpower. mskpjb (Sheila)
I am still a smoker ........... I know, I'm disgusted with myself! But I have gone from 30+ roll-ups a day to less than 10. It's those last few habit fags that are the hardest to give up. I can't use the patches because they bring me out in a rash. I can't use champix due to it conflicting with other meds I'm on. I've tried different types of nicotine gum, lozenges, tabs etc but being a roll-up smoker they taste disgusting! So, I'm left with willpower, which has helped me cut down but now I'm at a brick wall. I had considered the e-cigs but I'd just be trading one habit for another and possibly one harmful drug for another harmful vapour. I'm now considering hypnotherapy but I'm not the most open-minded person so have to get some more info before going ahead.
Whichever method you choose I wish you the best of luck.
