I have never heard of boco...etc. Could you confirm the spelling? Some of these conditions are tricky to spell. I would be interested to find out like you.
Bronchiectasis this is i think the correct spelling as i have took it off the nhs choice web site my question beening thre same is it the same as copd
No it isn't the same at all kiaman. I have bronchiectasis but not copd. Some people though do have both.

ps why do you ask kiaman? x
it is cause that one of junior member ofmyconsultants team told me it is the same as copd but i have not been able to talk to my consulatant directy yet
i have been suffering from asthma snce i was two and now also starting to suffer from boco and it is getting worse
Hi Kiaman, I too suffer from Bronchiectasis and I too, some time ago, saw a junior member of my consultants team who upset me by giving me negative information. I spoke to my GP as I was very worried, and and he told me to phone the consultant's secretary and ask to see my consultant and only my consultant, on my next appoitment (apparently this is our right). The secretary was lovely and did just that. My consultant did not mention it and neither did I and I have not seen this young man again. I too am asthmatic so I understand your problems. Have you had a CT scan yet? I am now on Zithromycin 3 days per week and I am once again feeling really well. Good luck and do let us know how you get on. Take care. Maximonkey
Hi I have been led to believe that COPD is an umbrella term for a group of lung conditions including chronic bronchitis, bronhoectasis and asthma.
Sorry if this is incorrect
It used to be included under that "umbrella" but no longer is. Here is a quote from Chest Heart & Lung Scotland's brochure about bronch:
"Bronchiectasis is defined by inflamed, permanently and irreversibly damaged airways. Common symptoms of bronchiectasis include a chronic cough, producing sputum (phlegm), recurrent chest infections, fatigue and breathlessness.
"Bronchiectasis is not to be confused with bronchitis and, unlike chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), it is not related to smoking."

thanx auntymary your chss.org publication is very good,. I do question why all these publications never mention the importance of taking probiotics after antibiotics, we get increasingly ill without the probiotic to replace the normal digestive good bacteria that is completely wiped out by repeated courses of antibiotcs.
I was pleased you posted that useful link though, loads of info in there. thank you ff.

Hi zube, I take actimel or morrison's probiotic drink. as you say I think it's a good idea to take something and because I'm on antibiotics all the time, it worries me that I'd be more prone to pick up other bugs, such as the dreaded c.diff, if I had to go into hospital.
I find the "Mail online" health pages very informative (hate the daily mail otherwise tho!) and they had a good review of various probiotic drinks, by a Professor of Microbiology. I've looked it up in case it's helpful for you

Hi everyone,I have Bronchiectasis, alpha 1 antitrysim, copd.Apparently it's genetic. My sons have been tested,(clear so far),My younger brother and two of my nephews have the disease.I was not diagnosed until I retired from work aged 60,(6yrs ago).Though from my early years I had pneumonia, collapsed lung,TB,numerous bouts of plurisy, umpteen chest infections. My mother died several years ago from emphasymia, but have since learnt that she and my late father had the disease Bronchiectasis,A1a,etc. All I can say is I'm so grateful for progress. I know there is a drug which is used in quite a few countries (not Britain cos it's too expensive),thats supposed to halt further deteriation,it does'nt suit everyone but for those it does suit theres a marked improvement.Lets hope BLF can get the same funding etc,as other major illnesses.Sorry to go on but I do think BLF could do with a bit more help.
I have been told my my specialist that they are not the same at all, I got this from my children both having whooping cough at the same time, for me the filters are damaged that clear the mucus away, I am told I am trivial in one small
area .. Lung function 99% but I do cough daily when the need is felt.. My problem is every now and again I seem to pop a vessel in my eye, I must have a weakness in it. When I first found out about this from a coincidental CCT scan I needed counselling for 18 months and became very afraid, now its part of me and I grow with it.. Not happy about it but I try to keep happy as I am a carer for my daughter and she has worse than this to deal with for a young person.. So don't panic. we are all different and don't read to many scary stories.
