It depends on the level of severity. There is a huge difference between mild and very severe COPD. Someone with mild COPD would probably have few or even no symptoms and many people with mild COPD would not notice a big difference in their health. Even at the severre stage symptoms and limitations vary a lot. I am classed as very severe and have used oxygen for 6 years but have only just given up work, whislt others have to leave work at a much earlier stage. Congratulations on being symprom free.
If you have been diagnosed with COPD it does not mean you'll have the same issues as others. You tend to hear more bad news than good in forums like this as the people seeking help and advice are often suffering one issue or another.
It may be that you are very early stage, and by knowing this and controlling your own body and how you use or abuse it you could have many happy years ahead of you. Had I listened to the advice I was given when I had pneumonia, nearly 20 years ago now , or when I was diagnosed with COPD, to stop smoking and change my diet a bit, I may not have been as bad as I am now. I joked with the nurse 'well, I walk to the chip shop'...
For peace of mind, call the BLF hotline during the week and have a chat with them, see what they come up with. 03000 030 555
All I can add is I am classed as moderate but it barely affects my life. The only times I really notice anything is when I am walking up flights of stairs, uphill and against the wind. I think it is because I am pretty fit otherwise, I stopped smoking and I take quite a lot of exercise.
Gordon's advice, as always, is sensible. Give the helpline a ring.
