Does anyone else get this ?? it is really scarey . The soreness is like an open wound being rubbed with salt , it is not the usual and normal soreness of a chest infection . The best way i can describe is that it feels like part of my lung is red raw and coughing makes it worse but you feel you have to cough , every breath is taken with caution in case it makes it worse or if it has subsided you feel it might come back , as if it is in the background rather like the after pain of a cramp that you feel may start again if you move your leg again . My consultant has no idea what it is .
I have a virus at the moment and have had several episodes of this soreness but not the flat straw stage yet . It seems to happen at any time , not always when i have a virus but it is more frequent then . Any enlightenment would be much appreciated . I wondered if it was an asthma attack , but have not heard anyone say about the soreness with asthma , or if it was severe inflamation and perhaps bleeding or weeping ( as i do get a small amount of blood produced occasionally ) and then the lungs maybe sticking together . xxxx Dinny xxxx

I have mentioned it to my GP , Last year i had an episode of this (i didn't have a virus or chest infection at the time ) and i got to the , breathing through a flat straw stage almost straight away . I wrote on paper for my husband to ring the GP out of hours emergency number ( it was about 10pm ) . The GP on was a locum and wouldn't come out but said i should come to surgery which i couldn't do as i couldn't move . I did eventually start breathing properly but it took me 2 hours to feel it had passed properly enough to relax and i had a fretful night . I went to the GP to complain about the locum and explained how i felt etc and he said to phone an ambulance if it happens again . I have also mentioned it to the respiratory nurse who said to use inhaler , i said i can't breath in so how would it work , she said it would but i have yet to try it . The consultant said she had no idea what it was , nothing she has ever heard of . I am glad that nobody has replied to say they have had experience of it themselves as i wouldn't wish it on my worsed enemy but i would be so delighted if someone new what it was so i could try to find a remedy , thanks for reply xxxx Dinny xxxx
It might be worth investigating what is giving off pollen this time of year if if happend same time last year. Record dates, times it happens, hope it won't happen again to you but if it does do as your GP recomended call the ambulance. Make sure you are taking your inhaler meds routinely same time each day or if you find that the incidence happens around the same time take your reliever med before that time. For info aster and cysanths are in flower this time of year, do you have crysanths in the home at this time of year maybe (just a suggestion on possible causes). Try to think what may be different at the times of these attacks.
Hypercat mentioned using a spacer at this times, I know a spacer helps me alot whenever my airways narrow to the point I feel I can't inhale enough. A sensation I get is like the two walls of my throat are touching, its uncomfortable and a little worrying but I find it is relieved a little with the reliever med used through a spacer. I experience this mostly if I get a cold, hence I avoid at all costs getting a cold or the flu virus.
Hope some of this is helpful to you.
I still think its worth going back again to your doc whenever you get one of these episodes especially if you are getting some blood with it too. Just so the doc can check you out and if need be send you for further testing.
Take good care, remember to get your flu shot.
Hi dinnyraynor. Poor you that must be awful and so frightening for you.
I agree go back to doctor. Perhaps you could write down the symptons and show it to him/her? Taking someone with you who has witnessed it might help too.
I will take your advice , thank you xx , . I do use a spacer and it does have a better chance of working than without xx. I must admit that posting this problem has thrown up a side i hadn't thought of as i suppose it must sound as if i am being negative because proposed solutions are fielded by me because they are treating the symptom rather than the problem , i need to emphasise the possible cause which is the feeling of severe stinging when i breathe in , even at the slow rate that i can at these times , which is probably caused by inflamation either from virus , infection or environmental factors . I am going to write all this down and copy it for each DR in the hope that someone will come up with a solution , i will also take someone with me xx thanks xx. xxxx Dinny xxxx
I have also had another thought, this I am finding at my local surgery, I have had to kick and fight and find the information myself before they will do anything. I found going to the out of hours gp who does not seem to be constrained by budgets and the couple I saw were more up to date doctors if you know what I mean .
The surgery's seem to be on very tight budgets, and are loath to do anything, from you symptoms though I would say they need to explore more .
I will try all avenues systematically till i get an answer or exhaust all options , i must get an answer to this as it is concerning me now which is bad for us copd patients xx , thanks for your help xxxx Dinny xxxx
There is a ' main ' or senior partner who is hard to get to see but is a superb doc , i will get an appointment with him , many thanks . xxxx Dinny xxxx
No way ,that sounds unbearable,I would go to hospital and not leave until I was seen by someone who knows about lungs....docs n nurses are not trained most of the time, short of money n time.Hospitals have trained staff, that's what you need, make them respect you and if no response go private!
Im having this feeling now it started yesterday , they did a chest xray and nothing, ekg nothing, anxiety shot (even though I felt fine) still nothing and then they did blood work and nothing so they sent me home still with shortness of breath and on a sedative .. they looked at me like I was crazy .
