you can arrange for a test kit to be sent to you from ADAPT, Birmingham University Hospital, if you take this to your GP he will do blood test and results take about 3 weeks. All GPs should know about alpha 1. Contact alpha 1 awareness who can send you information leaflets. hope this helps. best wishes Sally

I asked the doctor if I could possibly have alpha1 as my Mum and my Dads brother had Emphysema as well and I was concerned for my son who still smokes...she said '' Don't be silly my dear, you would be dead already!'' I was 52 at the time? and I have 'severe' Emph.

Think i was lucky as my GP was interested in alpha 1, ive since learnt that any one under 60 who develops emphysema should be tested for alpha 1, GPs should spot if lung function is well below what it should be for your age . I was diagnosed when i was 47, im 54 now and still going strong !! best wishes Sally

I asked my doc and he arranged for the test - I wanted to know if my kids were at risk of inheriting this....it proved negative though, so good.
