Respiratory Nurse hero!

Tiggertheterrier profile image

yesterday I had a scheduled appointment with a respiratory nurse. Things have been going downhill and I was very low when I saw her. I broke down in tears. Bless her, she was just wonderful. Took some notes then dashed off to speak to the consultant's team. By the time I got home I'd received an outpatients appointment next Friday. Some of these nurses are worth their weight in gold!

That's good to hear. It cheers me up after some of the reports we've read on here about inadequate staff. xxx

I have a wonderful Respiratory nurse whom I can contact daily.. she checks on me and chats to me regularly..she is part of my Respiratory team and each and everyone of them are fantastic. They come to my house to take blood. Do my oxygen assessment etc. They are a team of 5 working with my consultant and are angels..hope you have the same support from your team xxSheila,,🥰

So good to hear your Respiratory nurse is so good and helpful. Sadly I only get to see the normal nurse at the surgery and I am going to have to insist on seeing a Respiratory nurse because I am getting nowhere. Brian

Yes you are so right. Where I used to live we had a Respiratory clinic attached to a doctors surgery and they were brilliant. Brian

thanks for reply. I find I'm getting very isolated now that I'm on my own. There are activity groups I would like to join, but the constant evil-evil-sounding cough is embarrassing and the fatigue means I fall asleep at every opportunity!

That's really good news.

Around December 2023 my breathing suddenly got so bad that I was becoming breathless while simply walking around the house or having a shower. After having a chest X ray, blood tests and a CT scan my GP couldn't understand what was going on, so last August he referred me to a consultant. A few days later he rang me to tell me that they had refused to see me until I had completed another course of pulmonary rehabilitation. I only have 3 more sessions to do to complete the course now, so hopefully he will refer me again towards the end of March. Unfortunately when I had my annual COPD check with the practice nurse a few weeks back she said that there was a 12 month wait to see a consultant in my area, so I will be lucky to see one this year 🙄

hello sandra1951. That all seems quite convoluted! Making you jump through hoops first. Waiting lists for secondary care can make you weep . I actuactually moved house, 250 miles, to an area with lower waiting times, in 2024. The postcode lottery needs sorting out urgently. Hope you can get your appointment expedited.

At least with it taking so long to see a consultant, I have learned how to adapt to my worsening condition to some extent, by giving up doing a lot of what I used to do and using a seat in the bath while showering as I cannot not stand for as long as I could do before December 2023. My niece keeps telling me to pay for a private consultation, in order to finally find out what's changed, so if they again say that it is going to take up to 12 months after my GP next refers me, I may have to go down that route, that would at least hopefully get my foot on the first rung of the ladder, as I don't have the lung power or the money to climb up more than that first step.
