In the Shallow Waters.

My first try fish and plants in the sea shallow water. There are mistakes I have noted for another time.

Cyclids are river fish, tropical, these are really tropical river fish. used to keep cyclids years ago. Some live in differend PH levels. while most are freshwater,

Discus an example of a cyclid that will live in sea water. (Corrected)

Next 2 paintings, a scene and a full canvas of Hydrangeas.

Well that's different Ern! I love the detail in the plants and I love the movements of the fish: well I can imagine the movement by the contours you make. But is that a lamp or the sun? I do like how you have shaded the top third of the painting with the lighting effect. What does the Mrs say! Well done for dipping your toes in the water.

Thank you David. No it was the sun - Had I gone further with the dark blue would have been different. Anne likes it , she is supportive though. , next time will be set up different. Thanks for the idea.

Yes, I'd very much like to see more; even cloud-shaped fish haha. (Same size as your clouds!)

Lol - "My Clouds" wonder how many canvases needed to sew together, :-)

Two "clouds" are sufficient. Full length and exotic!

Brings back happy memories. There used to be a big tank of Cyclids in our local Tesco's. My dad and I were tickled when a passing member of staff knocked some fish food which had been caught on the rim into the tank. The fish saw what he was about to do and rushed to that corner of the tank. When he was gone Dad and I tried it too with the same result. Very intelligent fish. Nice to see them on canvas. Chris xxx

Beautiful Ern 😍 and thanks for the info on the cyclids , I always assumed tropical fish came from warm water oceans Looking forward to the hydrangeas, the ones that formed part of one of your paintings that we saw a few weeks ago were stunning x

Thank you Val. Fish we had for years in a large tank, a fantastic hobby. X

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toErn007

My dad had them for years in a big tank built into a recess I remember every now and again they’d all go in the bath whilst the tank had a good clean 😂 and he always put in a rubber ring before he fed them to keep the food in one spot and once the fish saw the ring they knew it was feeding time and come to the top ready to be served 😂. Dad managed to breed a few of them too but if I remember rightly most of them were eaten once they were transferred to the main tank 🤦🏼‍♀️. I have a lot of lovely childhood memories concerning those fish ( despite the cannibalism lol ) x

Ern007 profile image
Ern007 in reply toThepainterswife

Anne and I started with a 3 foot tank and not large enough, then a 5 foot pluss tank. All plants plastic to introducing disease,, in particular for the black mollies. A larger tank allowed us to have Cyclids like the Angelfish (Freshwater) and my fav the docile Keyhole Cyclids Platies to arumentative so they went. Catfish and black mollies and swordtails because of their peacfull temperments - We tried lots more but memory not what it was. Black Molly would let you finger-feed, and bread easy but as you say " cannibalism" none ever suvived. Neon Teats and Black tets all good for a shoal and so small never took much room up. When we god older, looking after a tank that size became impossible to do it propper.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toErn007

My dad had all those and I never thought some of them were river fish 😃 My dad had the tank for years then it sprung a leak ( a few had already been fixed ) I think he was a bit relieved because as you said there’s a lot of work involved in keeping a large tank in good condition Lovely hobby though x

Ern007 profile image
Ern007 in reply toThepainterswife

There are a few varieties of cyclids that are salt water even brackesh, but mostly people who buy Anglefish, Keholes , the huge Oscars and kribensis are what people would normally buy for fresh water tanks.

Yes with a large tank mainainace really is hard work, I was sorry to see ours go, but keeping it fit fish to live in became to difficult.

It's a great hobby, so was keeping budgies, same again keeping aviary clean became to much. Gret memories though x
