the surgery has loaned my husband a Nebuliser, we have the prescription to put in it but have no idea how to use it, do I phone the surgery for help? The only thing is we have to get a taxi to get there & back it’s expensive to keep going there, I wondered if they would send someone out to us. Thank you

It's very easy. You don't say what they have given you to use in it. If it is salbutamol or ipatropium simply put the cup together and put the drug into it. Put the mouthpiece or mask on it and turn it on. It will produce a mist which you breathe in until it finishes. There may also be saline which you can use on its own or after the others have finished. I doubt if it will be antibiotic because you will need a visit to the hospital to nebulise that the first time with a nurse present. Give the cup a good wash afterwards. I soak mine in milton about twice each week. You can probably find a video on You Tube showing how to do it.The purpose of the nebuliser is to open the airways and loosen the mucus so the most important thing is that your husband does breathing exercises and scrupulously gets rid of the mucus after he has used the nebuliser.
Hello,
Blimey, that’s not very helpful of them is it ? Offering equipment and not giving any guidance is a bit pointless in my book ?
You may be able to figure it out alone but not everyone would be able to do. It is a learning point for the surgery.
May I suggest you call the surgery and ask that the practice nurse calls you to guide you through how to use the nebuliser correctly. Don’t let them fob you off.
Let us know how you get on.
Go well
Pauline
Try googling instructions on how to use + make of nebuliser. Sometimes there are video tutorials that come up on youtube. xx
That's awful!! I'd call the surgery. If they have given you a nebuliser, your husband obviously needs it, but they have to explain how to use it. You need good clear instructions from them. Xx
YouTube may have a tutorial that you can watch, if anything like me I need to see if a couple of times to get the hang of it. Or perhaps give the help line a call 0300 222 5800
if you can’t find a video one you tube, try searching on the lung foundation website.
Hello, If you haven't managed to work it yet. Call the surgery and request a home visit from the nurse. Not because of the taxi cost, you are struggling to manage yourself and husband.
If a Nebuliser is required, then he must be quite unwell, breathing difficulties etc Unfortunately, at times the need for firmness while requesting is needed, you deserve a home call, ask if there is a Respiratory Team you can be referred to, failing that a community nurse, Wish you well
thank you everyone for your very kind suggestions. My husband has pulmonary fibrosis, he’s under St Wilfred’s Hospice so I phoned the hospice and a very kind nurse is coming out this morning to show him what todo. Thank you, stay well, Xrossstitch
