Oxygen therapy

My hospital Oxygen therapy appointment has been cancelled 3 times. I've been waiting to see if this will aid my breathlessness. I've also tried to get an appointment with the Respiratory nurse in my Dr's Surgery to be told there is a months waiting list to speak to her. You would have thought we would be getting back to normal now with Hospital & Dr's appointments. I'm suffering now more than ever but can't seem to get the help I need. I have read that Oxygen supplements doesn't help with aiding breathlessness, has anyone else have views on this please.

Oxygen doesn't help with breathlessness but if your oxygen levels in your body are low, using oxygen will make you feel better. Our organs and the rest of our body needs oxygen to function properly. You really need your oxygen levels checking and your GP can do this with an oximeter. You don't say if you have a asthma or another lung condition.

Sorry Jansy I have just read your previous posts which say you have asthma and heart condition. So sorry. It's appalling your appointment has been cancelled. I would get in touch with the hospital and tell them how much you are struggling.

Thank you for replying, my Oxygen level is when active around 86 & when resting can go up to 92. I will phone the Hospital tomorrow & find out why my appointments are being cancelled. I think the staff are probably down with Covid as are my local Surgery. I will let you know what they say tomorrow. Kind regards to you.

When you phone them tell them your oximeter readings and how much you really need your appointment as you can't go on like this. Do let me know how you get on Jansy.

The delays are really not good at all, especially when you need urgent treatment. I do hope you can get a result from chasing up the hospital x

Good luck in contacting the hospital. As Biofreak said, tell them your sats when active to emphasise your situation. I hope that you will get seen soon.

Jan, , with your previous medical history you possibly have phone numbers for the secretaries of consultants that you have seen. Your cardio consultant would want an oxygen supplementation assessment with the sats that you are reporting. Who referred you originally for the oxygen assessment?

I have found that going directly to the original reference source often has more positive results and that secretaries to consultants have always been helpful.

I hope that you sort this soon Meanwhile do you know about’ ‘pursed lip breathing’ as it often can help low saturation levels to improve.

My best wishes, Grace

I've been on oxygen24/7 for almost a year now and to be honest I did expect it to take care of my breathlessness but then it was explained that it was to protect my heart. Apparently low oxygen levels can lead to damage of all internal organs. My levels can drop to low80s and even 70s on exertion but recover with rest and inactivity even with the oxygen but it does make life more manageable. Good luck x
