co-Trimoxazole

Has anyone been prescribed this and how did you get on with it? My husband had this prescribed to deal with a stubborn bacterial infection and took 2 x twice daily. He was given 2 months supply but after 6 weeks started to feel nauseous. Have now had to stop this medication and have a hospital follow up early August. It’s really getting him down. Managing bronchiectasis is really difficult and always seems to be a case of trial and error.

I have been on Sulphonamides like this, to be honest I have had no bad side effects . never had it for 2 months though.

Your husband needs to be seen earlier than August, or the germs will keep partying in his lungs. Phone your consultant's secretary if he's under a consultant. Otherwise see your GP as soon a s possible.

Thank you for your reply. This is the earliest appointment the lung defence have at the hospital. By the time we get through the hurdles at the doctors ie reception, triage etc it will be August.

It's depressing that it takes so long to get anywhere. We seem so often to be at the back of the queue. Is it that no-one likes to admit how little they know about bronchiectasis.

I’ve used co-trimoxazole and really liked it. It got rid of the lingering bugs and I had zero side effects. I hope he can get seen soon xx

Hi, I’ve just been prescribed this while in hospital with pneumonia and awaiting results from a Bronchoscopy . The most awful of tablets , I was like your husband extremely nauseous, they were giving me anti sickness tablets to help but I got to the stage that as soon as I came to swallow the tablets I just became clammy and began to vomit before they touched my throat ! The fact they are so big doesn’t help too ! Hope you get sorted with an alternative soon x

Hi I know the feeling ,I had the same effect when I was in hospital for PCP.

The hospital changed it to a yellow medicine given orally by syringe.

It worked

I was given Co trimoxazole half dose as a prophylactic drug for 6 months on discharge , luckily no adverse effects.

I hope you improve

Regards

Brian

I take it 3 days a week with my leukaemia drug to keep me safe from getting lung infections, I think I'm getting nausea and dizziness from it but could be combo of all the other nasty drugs I take. I have to stick with it though, only other option is for me to go into hospital every month to have a nebuliser with a different drug straight into my lungs.

I take it three times a week with no ill effects. I prefer this to Azithromycin. We’re all different though.

Thank you for your reply. Pleased you have no ill effects. The high dose my husband was on of 2 tablets twice daily was just too much for him . Just hoping they have something else with no side effects.

Hi Maninblack

I too have COPD and Bronchiectasis and have had chest infection since February 24. I have been given Amoxicillin (didn’t work) and co-trimoxazole (5 days worth and wouldn’t listen that I needed 14 days!) which cleared it but for a short time. Finally a Consultant read my notes and told me not to take the Amoxicillin and wrote out a script for 14days of high strength Co-trimoxazole …. fingers crossed it has worked. I too have had nausea but I find that it is with Amoxocyline. Hope you get better soon xx

Yes I have had this and I was ok with it, it just didn't work but 6 seems is a long time to be on this antibiotic. Did it help at all?

Thank you for your reply. My husband hadn’t got any symptoms but following IV treatment to eliminate a pseudomonas bacterial infection, another bacteria of the same family was found to be growing. However his sputum has been clear throughout. We won’t know if the few weeks he took Co-Trimoxazole has until he goes to the hospital early August . It appears these bugs lie dormant deep in the lungs and can eventually cause an infection as they colonise.

So sorry to hear that. How does he feel in himself?

He feels fine. No excessive coughing and aids to manage everything working well. I would say he gets depressed now and then but do my best to keep him occupied with walks and the occasional outing. Hope you continue to do well and stay free of infections.

Im glad he feels ok. Thank you. I will but it's not easy. This is the best I felt for 6 months. It's about learning to live with a lung condition that I know isn't going away.
