there’s always a silver lining if you’re not the one suffering

well I didn’t laugh, I have shown lots of concern and given what I thought was sound advice.

Grumpygrampy tripped in the bathroom. Silly sod only went and broke the toilet seat lid 🙄 in my humble opinion I would hazard a guess he’s broken a couple of ribs. So lots of pain relief, bit of rest then doing lots of little moving around. Two weeks on and he’s back to his usual grumpy self. Soon he’ll be back to normal.

The silver lining comes in the form of his coughing. It is still really painful for him. However he has been using his blue inhaler a lot more and his oxygen, due to fear of coughing and it hurting. So where’s the silver lining you’re thinking. After years of this awful cough day and night, using the above mentioned he is hardly coughing and when he does it’s short lived. A nurse friend advised that he use the blue inhaler as it thins the mucus and we didn’t want him getting infections from not coughing and not being so mobile. Funnily enough he listened to her. So alls quiet in our household for a while😉

That sounds really painful and reminded me of something similar Pete did a while back. He slipped in our bathroom and broke the toilet seat. Luckily he was ok and didn’t hurt his back again.

Thank goodness the cough has improved for Grumpygrampy and hope he continues to do a bit better. Xxx

what a misadventure! And a painful one at that. It’s good to know Grumpygrampy is getting back to his normal self. That’s a pretty good silver lining though. Long May it continue!

I sympathise with Grumpygramp, since I fell out of the bath about a year ago (and posted my tale of woe on here.) I'm glad it's helped his cough and peace reigns in your house. Is he on Carbocisteine? That is normally prescribed for mucus thinning. I'm surprised the blue inhaler helps much. It sounds to me as if he needs a proper MOT, or is he too grumpy to contemplate one. He needs to see a competent consultant. Beat wishes- long may your peaceable life continue. xxx

Thanks for that. He’s a man, moans if I even suggest mentioning things to the doctors. He’s getting better at discussing problems with his respiratory nurse. He is due to see her soon so hopefully he’ll tell her about this latest problem and how he managed it. X

I'm glad he likes his nurse. That's progress- for a man. 😀 x

Poor old Grumpygrampy! I've just been in the same boat!

I went to rush out of the front door, tripped, landed first on the step (damaged knee) and then tipped down onto the block paving bashing my face (broken tooth) and - the worse thing of all - damaging my sternum! Now, the pain I have had with that has been worse than giving birth, so Grumpygrampy is getting my sympathy vote here!!!

I'm glad he's recovering now, as am I, but the cough is an absolute bugger and hurts like hell, so I am also doing my best to suppress it - and - guess what? It's becoming much less frequent. It's as though my body is re-learning and discovering that it doesn't need to cough as much. Perhaps it had become a habit. Perhaps it will return once I'm back to normal. Who knows?

Anyway, it was interesting to read your post and find that someone else has been struggling like I have. I couldn't sleep in bed for almost a week so slept in my recliner chair which was much more comfortable. I took co-codamol at night but paracetamol during the day (all on GPs advice). I had to go to A&E because I had bashed my face and head and am on Apixaban so I was well looked after there and thoroughly tested for everything going!

Best wishes to Grumpygrampy. May he continue to climb the ladder back to better health.

xx Moy

PS If he's still grumpy, go and get yourself some chocolate and a bottle of wine!!!

Ouch, you have my every sympathy, that must be so painful. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I agree maybe the cough has become habit. Many of us don’t get it if we haven’t had it.

Very much improved today, thanks, but couldn't suppress the cough just now and it was a real 'Ouch!' moment! xx Moy

I hope you're making good progress, Moy. Life does throw some gruesome things at us. The chocolate and wine should be on prescription. xxx

This put a smile on my face as one living with another grumpy grandad. Hope he continues to improve and keeps using the inhaler and oxygen. Xx

My brother in law had this problem when he got pleurisy and ended up suppressing his cough because it hurt so much, he got some kind of drawing ointment from his chemist which really helped, my sister said it took months for his cough to come back. It does make you wonder if its possible to stop your cough by doing this. I do hope that grumpy grandpa gets better soon x

Us old'uns have got to beware of falling over. I've fallen over a few times in the past, and have the scars to show. Now, I'm very careful, looking out for ant trip hazard. However, wearing my old favourite sandals, in the process of closing the gazebo cover, I fell over backwards, into the gazebo post, which saved me. Had one tiny wound, where my wedding ring dug into the palm of my hand. Blooming lucky I got away lightly. What is was, the sole of my beloved sandals, had fallen apart, and tripped me up. They are now in the black wheelie bin. Take extra care!

Funnily enough, I saw an acupuncturist some years ago who said the more I coughed encouraged the lungs to produce more mucus. Makes you think 🤔

That's interesting. I have been troubled with a cough for years - sometimes productive - sometimes dry. Having to suppress it due to sternal fracture seems to have almost stopped the cough altogether!
