Stairlift and DNR update

Hello again.

Hubby medically fit and almost ready for discharge- mobility has really gone downhill. Occ Therapy and Physio are involved.

As we don’t have a stairlift (or any aids at all as neither of us have needed them) OT wanted hubby to live downstairs (toilets are upstairs) and use a comode. He can’t go upstairs because he can’t get down and there is the unlikely event of a fire.

I rang Acorn stairlifts yesterday at 2 pm. Man came and measured up, price etc at 4.30 same day. He said they could fit on Friday. Phone call this morning - they can fit today!

I thought I’d post in case anyone here needs a stairlift in a hurry. They also do reconditioned ones.

It sounds as if you’re well organised with the stairlift. Will you have a commode anyway in case of urgency? We’re fortunate to have a downstairs toilet which Pete needs.

Wishing you and your husband well. Hope he makes a good recovery. Xxx❤️😘

I’m chasing aids tomorrow. While the stairlift was being fitted I tried to chase up the OT home assessment. (Two different local authorities) I Durham , where we are, they do a home assessment when the person is in the home, not prior to discharge. All aids are ordered by hospital OT and delivered by mediquip. A comode is on the list.

That’s very similar to what Pete went through after hospital discharge when he fell downstairs. He had an assessment at home and equipment was provided. I’m trying to talk him into a stairlift but so far no joy. Xx

Pete after my own heart Carole. I won't have a stair lift either. I'll keep going no matter how long it takes. It's excercise xxlots of love xx🤾🤾

It is but Pete struggles because of his back and breathing Sheila. He has heart problems too so a stairlift could be useful. I don’t want to have to move.

Sending lots of love to you, Carole xxx😘😘🩷🤩

Well done with Acorn, we have just had one fitted by them and it has transformed my life. I was virtually stuck upstairs permanently, although I could get down I could not get back up again . They fitted and demonstrated it within 50 minutes and I am delighted to be mobile again. Friend of ours tried our stairlift yesterday and were so impressed they are having one fitted on Friday by Acorn. Good luck with yours

I've had my Acorn stairlift 15 years (I bought it originally for my wife who died of lung cancer 2010 and it is still as good as new. Maintained under , a contract, bit expensive but well worth it. They are of course very slow and I'd advise your husband to keep a pee bottle handy downstairs in case of urgency. I hope you get as much enjoyment from your Acorn as I do from mine.

My husband used to pee in a bottle (bone cancer) saved the pain of getting to the loo.

we rent our stair lift, it was fitted within a couple of days, we rent our home as well so don’t want to spend money on a permanent one

How much is their annual service charge? I know someone who has to pay £500. Did you buy new or reconditioned?

Troilus profile image
Troilus in reply to GintyFerguson

I bought it new but they do offer reconditioned. The first year there is no service charge. Then you are charged £10 a month but it is optional. You have 14 days after installation to decide if you want to keep it

Gosh £10 a month? That's cheap. I must check with the person I know. I'm sure she's paying more than that.

Glad he is on his way home, that's great news 😊

I got a stairlift after a 2.5 month stay in hospital. It was fitted very quickly by a company that deals in reconditioned stairlifts (£500). It was a godsend as my only loo is upstairs and I live alone. I don't need it now, but it is still very useful for getting things like laundry, plants (!) and anything really, up and downstairs, and it is there of course if I am not having a good day. I couldn't be without it.

Just remind him how slow they are, Don is probably right! My granddaughter says I need a turbo on it!

Hope all goes well on his discharge, all the best xx

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Home today. Busy learning about urinary problems after catheterisation. Not whether to apply for a job as an OT or a district nurse. 😁

that’s fast ! It’s worth noting that with there being similar house types it is possible to remove and refit where house types are the same. We saved thousands of pounds getting one from a Neighbour’s house . The mobility co in Wigston Leics. were great . Hope your husband finds his mobility improves xx

Troilus profile image
Troilus

You can do that with this one, Thinkhealthy. It comes in sections rather than a solid track - had to get this type because it isn’t a straight staircase - so if you move it can go with you.

They used round here BerryHead - my dad got his for free - but not anymore. I think they should - they don’t come cheap, but you can get 2nd hand ones from certain suppliers.
