Periodic rhinitis

Every two to three weeks I have a day when my nose constantly streams with watery mucus as a result of sneezing. I have no warning and have been prescribed Avamys which I don't like so use rarely. The ENT consultant says Sterimar is good but cannot give me any reason for the problem. Any suggestions. Thank you

hello Tykelady. I have a runny nose every day. I have tried so many otc and had 2 different prescriptions. Nothing seems to work. I’m trying neilmed sinus rinse just now but not sure if that is going to be any good Perhaps some one will have a solution Let’s hope so

Mine runs, goes away and returns, I think maybe some kind of allergy.

My nose runs, I think it's probably an irritant. goes away then come back.

My nose runs due t o having had line inserted last time in hospittal. When i can breathe through my nose it keeps the nose moist . When I get out of breath and have to breathe t hrough my mouth my nose runs li ke a tap.

It doesn’t coincide with you going swimming does it?I have found that I react to pool water when swimming inside. My nose streams a few hours afterwards. ..or is there something else you do just before this happens?

My nose has run since I was a child- down to a cold house, coal fire, smog, people smoking I would guess. It's better now I'm out in the sticks. I wish someone would come up with a solution. xx

Try a simple symptoms, activities, weather and food/drink log or diary to see if you can spot anything that happens shortly before the streaming nose episode. It may bring something to light you hadn't expected. If it happens every two to three weeks, try to maintain the diary for at least two months.

All the best.

Just when i need more breath doing more activity and have to breathe through mouth then i sit down and nose streams. Can feel it start and travel down nose to drip . Liquid, not mucous

On checking BBC weather forecast for my town a couple of days ago I was surprised to noticed the pollen count was high. Because the cold and wet recently I hadn't bothered to look

Tree pollen first before you see any flowers.

Hi Tykelady, my nose drips most of the time (not streaming but drips), I put it down to the mucus thinners I take and hope it means that it's less mucus going into my lungs. Wishful thinking maybe😊xxx

At least I'm not alone in waiting for the dewdrop to fall. I am going to try and be more thorough with the nasal washouts. I do mouth breath during the night even with my oxygen on. Thanks for all the replies.xx

Could be Hay Fever. I'm affected by trees issuing pollen from February. We have Hazel growing next to our garden, and there was catkins on them in February. I don't have too much problem with grass pollen, but a bit with mould spores from August into October. I take Loratadine antihistamine from early February into October. Then there is house dust, and bed bugs, which I understand have become prevalent this year.

Avamys contains a steroid, and I stopped taking that when I found that steroid can cause type 2 diabetes.

In 1987, I had an operation on my nasal cavities, which included removal of a polyp, and the trimming of little tiny bones in my air passages giving less restriction. My stuffy nose that I had from teenage years was improved tremendously. Quite a big op as I was off work for a fortnight.

I do have polyps which are being monitored in the hope that surgery will not be necessary.

It could be that histamine from various sources, builds up to make u symptomatic at that point.i use the imagery of yr histamine bucket, perhaps normally fills to a level that's tolerable but on that day, perhaps due to histamine in food, drinks, air etc,c rises,.causing the bucket to overflow, creating symptoms

I don’t often get sneezy but the nose runs or blocks up. I have all year round different allergies & take fexofenadine tablets, mometasone nasal spray (& asthma inhalers) (everything to flowers, tree pollen & so on.

Have you tried keeping a day to day diary of everything you eat, drink, do, perfumes etc also diarise day & time nose starts etc. You may be able to pinpoint where you were, what you were doing, who with (may be a friends perfume if it’s every 3 weeks, is that when you meet a friend or group. Hope it helps
