Have any of the oldies out there 70+ had pink disease in the past?
If so, does it have any effect on your current health?
Thanks in advance, Chris.
Please note, I`m not mentioning Easter, that way I might just stay away from the chocolate.

Ha. The magical mystery of Pink Disease. There has never been a solution to the question of how I had so many pneumonias from eight months old that resulted in bronch. Doing research as I will insist on, I came upon Pink disease, which, it may be supposed, resulted from use of old fashioned tooth powders plus other less sure origins. This apparantly caused multiple pneumonias ( resulting in bronchiectasis in those old enough to have been affected) and sometimes a pink tinge to the palms of the hands. I asked my consultant about it as she is at the top of the tree in the bronch medic community. She said yes, maybe, but Pink disease most often resulted in infertility. I have two children. As with other possible causes of bronch such as the first diptheria injection, there has not been enough research and as many of the bronchs who could have been affected were now 70 + there were other, more important areas of bronch research. I did read that the infertility was confined to males affected by Pink disease. So there you are. An overall useless response. If you find out any more please let us know.
Thank you. We have one daughter so no infertility, but she was born with cleft palette, any connection? My wife`s lung problems started when she was about 12 after injuring her lungs after a fall. Her main problem concerns her eyes and insensitivity to local anaesthetics. An eye op when the LA does not work is not fun. She was recently presribed cortisone for her bronch but immediately had head aches, dizziness so this has been abandoned. No doubt her lung specialist will come up with something else. At least the weather is warming up so breathing will be easier. In the meantime she is busy with litter of kittens - see photo. Must go as I have to collect grandson who has been running this weekend and it is an hour`s drive away.
If new owners want to neuter the males, that is their choice. We have been breeding cats and dogs over the last 50 years, always being careful to never have more than two litters from our cats. We are still in contact with people who bought from us in the early days, so assume that they were pleased with their purchase and cared for the cat or dog.
yes and they floated the first diptheria jab in a mercury based substance. So many people of my age started having pneumonias at that age when they had not had whooping cough or one of the other possible diseases which caused bronch. But of course nobody picked up on it and certainly no government is going to look at it restrospectively because of possible compensation claims. It has been fifteen years since I had this discussion with my consultant. I told her that I suspected the diptheria jab and that she must think that I was crazy. She replied that she didn’t think that I was crazy at all and that for me, it was a much more likely explanation than Pink Diseae. Three years later when my sister had the jab they had changed the formulation that they floated it in. Sorry to answer you with all of this information but I guessed that others might like to know as it is something which has been ignored (hidden) for so many years.
This is so interesting, we are about the same age LP so must have had this vaccination about the same time. I still have quite a large crater in my thigh from the jab & muscle damage. Mum tried to complain & get something done about it but in those days doctors were gods. I had an awful barking cough on & off for years which she thoughthought was whooping cough, she gave up on doctors so I just had to leave the room when it was bad . I now realise it must have been asthma . So many untreated bouts of 'bronchitis' throughouthe childhood. Thank goodness for that free orange vitamin drink!
LissacFrance, my nephew's second daughter was born with a cleft palate. Both parents had to have genetic tests & were told it was a miracle the first child didn't have it because it was due to a missmatch of parents genes. They were told berore the birth from scans but that it was very small - they were wrong, it was 4cms.
That is very interesting. My Mum was put down as a fussy mother because she kept asking why I was having so many pneumonias. Doctors have ever covered their ignorance with high handed dismissal and victim blaming. ( It was my first excellent bronch con who said that!).It is still going on as you know with my experience during and after the pacemaker insertion. No wonder I have a lifelong dislike and distrust of all medical 'professionals'
wow - this is interesting. I remember that ratter revolting powder.
I have bronch after a first pneumonia at 4 months followed by a lifetime of chest infections. I also make no antibodies to pneumonia (tested by the vaccine). My family were prolific talcum powder users but probably irrelevant.. It’s like a giant puzzle.
Your history is the same as mine, including the prolific talc use. Although my grandfather had the same problems as me which means a genetic component somewhere along the line. Guess we'll never truly know why were the 'chosen ones'.
i think the bronch is caused by the scarring from repeated infections, and the immunology team have isolated some genetic probs which seem to make me vulnerable .
Not so sure. My wife`s bronch occurred after an injury to her lungs, pleurisy and partially collapsed lung. The Pink disease was certainly from teething powder and she wore mitts between the age of 18 months to nearly three to stop her poking her eyes.
That's the problem with bronch and why we say that we are all different. Severe or repeated infection is usually what causes the 'insult' to the lungs and the resulting damage. Pleurisy and a collapsed lung seem to be the culprits here. I had pneumonia with pleurisy in my lungs 6 times before I was 3. Strangely following having the diptheria jab which was new and floated in mercury. There are also lots of genetic causes which resulted in repeated infections leading to bronch. Personally I think that Pinks Disease is a bit of a red herring, especially when asdociated to tooth powder which so many of us were too young to be using.
I had Pinks Disease as a baby and my mother told me it was caused by teething powder. She was told by doctors l would not live to 21. I will be 80 in a weeks time! I have RA, Bronchiectasis and heart failure now. RA started when l was 35, had many bouts of bronchitis when younger and HF discovered recently. I have not met anyone who has heard of pinks and very little on the I also had and still have problems touching my eyes although l have never had to wear glasses except for reading. Best wishes to your wife. Maureen.
Hi, thanks for the info. Little is known as it no longer exists, apart from in the older population, and even then, it was only a very low percentage who were seriously affected. We have often thought that the nerve damage had affected my wife in odd ways. She had an eye operation, local anaesthetic, except the anaesthetic did not work! Serious pain and needed additional GA. Not good for someone with bronch. Not only that but op a complete failure. My wife also has little sensation in fingertips, as well as serious arthritis. Heart is fine, hearing is better than average so not too many complaints at 73 years old. Stay safe and healthy, Chris.
Thank you. I looked it up on the Internet but very little information at all. You are so lucky being in France, especially in the countryside. Much better than here in the UK at the moment. Good luck to you both.
I had never heard of this but it does exist, if not in quite the form you mention. However at one time mercury was an ingredient I believe in tooth poowder...
Also called pink disease or infantile acrodynia, the acrodynic symptoms of irritability, photophobia, pink discoloration of the hands and feet, and polyneuritis can be attributed to chronic exposure to mercury. [2, 3, 4] In the early twentieth century, acrodynia affected as many as 1 in 500 children exposed to mercury.17 May 2022
