Good morning, i have very severe copd, i have been looking at the lung foundation exercise videos, i can do the warm up no problem, but the strength exercise is too much for me, my question is do i have to do the exercise straight off or could i spread them over the day until i could gradually get used to them? thanks now for any and all replies.

I would start off slowly chook and then gradually do more. But very gradually as my nurse just told me know your limits. 😉

I am always being told to pace myself, so do things when you feel is right for your body.

I am doing an asthma UK harmonica course, initially I could not complete a song as my breathing could not handle it. Very slowly I have got there.

Listen to your body. It's not a competition, you don't "have" to complete a certain number of exercises within a certain time. Do what feels right, and manageable, for you. You're in control, go at your own pace.

Have you asked for a pulmonary rehabilitation course? They help you find the right level for you. In meantime try as Mellywelly suggests.

i did one years ago, i know i couldn't do one now, plus it would cost me £15 in taxi fares can never get parked at my hospital and bus stop is to far away from it.

Basically you listen to your own body and exercise accordingly. I have a lung condition as well as various painful musculoskeletal problems. Due to that I build up slowly and often spread the exercises out over the day. Obviously if you have a flair such as a chest infection you may find your ability to exercise limited. I then start to build up again until I reach the level of exercise required.

A great idea whit to move the body- it will definitely benefit.

Have you seen a respiratory physio? They can offer ideas for exercise or as others have mentioned request a referral to join a PR course.

There some exercise videos on the Asthma Lung UK website you could try.

Warm up before you begin the actual exercise and take it from there. Activity does help our breathlessness and our bodies work better.

Let us know how you get on.

Go well,

Pauline

Just do what you can, you’ll be able to do more as you get used to them, small changes will make the biggest difference, good luck, let us know how you get on 😊🌺🌷xx

Any excercise is good! I do yoga and find it really helps. It's very popular so there should be classes near you. Chair yoga is even better if you are just beginning. I've also seen chair yoga classes on youtube. Good luck!

My only advice is to slowly build your exercise tolerance… And as Freud said ‘the only person you have to compare yourself to is you in the past’…

I was a Para 60 odd years ago, i would love to be that fit again.

If you are just starting, the warm-up alone is fine. Everyone here agrees little by little is right. You might be able to get free transport to Pulmonary Rehab, where they won't make you try anything you're not up to.

As an ex-physio, I'd say spread them over the day, and maybe cut down on the number of repetitions. Maybe do 5 instead of 10. Make a note of how many you have done each day and you will see progress, even if it's only 5 to 6 to7 repetitions! Just work within your comfort zone.

Are you on oxygen? Do you need a little to help you exercise? I am from the US so I don't know how you are evaluated for it but we need more O2 when we exercise. But I am rooting for you!
