I had a lung operation in January to remove dead tissue ( left lobe). I was prescribed gabapentin capsules but whenever I take them I have shortness of breath my chest feels a little tight and also I feel like I want to cough. I stop taking them and things start to settle down again especially after I’ve used my nebuliser, has anyone else experienced anything like this after taking them.

hi allyb, welcome to the group. I’m sorry I can’t answer you in this one. Have you talked to your doctor or maybe the pharmacist to see what they say. I’m sure someone will be along to answer your question soon. Theres a lot of knowledgeable people on here and loads of support. You could also look at old posts on the same subject, they might help you x
So many bad side effects from Gabapentin, I had so many I came off it, I don't think I had shortness of breath though. Get it changed for a different one there are plenty around
I would speak with your gp sounds like you have reaction to it. I take Gabapentin for neuralgia and dont have a problem with it x
I had gabapentin for sciatica pain ,no side effects at all
Hi there I believe a side effect of Gabapentin is a cough . It is good for pain however. I would discuss changing with Gp . I refused to take that pain killer when they first suggested it for arthritic pain to spite the fact they knew of my lung condition infact it was suggested by a top lung specialist if all else failed as my cough was a reflex cough which would benefit from physio or this drug . Hope you have better luck than I did.
Only problem Ihad wasconstipation ----- and how ,
I take Gabapentin AM and PM, no real side effects at all.
Hi Ally. I had 2 lung volume reduction surgeries & they gave me codeine for pain relief. I checked on google & it does say that gabapentin mixed with other medications can cause breathing difficulties.
It probably is best asking your pharmacist & give him a list of any other medications you take in case they are interacting with each other.
Hope you have a speedy recovery
Joe
Hi Ally I took gabapentin after my lobectomy because of nerve pain. Only had it for about 4 weeks after and didn’t notice breathlessness get any worse, I had 2 lobes removed so I did feel breathless when walking or going up hills anyway. My operation was in July 2020 and ny breathlessness is loads better now. All the best with your recovery. Definitely mention it to your GP though x
Thanks for replying , I will definitely mention it to my consultant, I had it done Jan 4th this year, glad to hear the breathlessness gets better as I love walking and getting about. My chest gets a bit wheezy as well, I don’t think anyone really has a problem with these tablets maybe it’s just coincidence.x
hi and welcome. Sorry I can’t advise however I wish you well x
I've no probs with gabapentin
