last week i went to south manchester hospital to discuss what i consider to be a (need) for a lung transplant
I informed the doctor that id been thinking about it for a long time & done a lot of research about it in full detail & it seemed that he was impressed
At the moment it was an indepth discussion about it & when he discussed the points I re iterated that virtually all the points we discussed i recognised from my research
He wants me to talk to a dietcian so ive got a phone appt (I expected that one of the points would be my weight) & put in my letter about having some fat around my waist (there was no need to describe it in detail in a letter though)-merely just say she was a bit overweight (which I am) - also because my BMI was a bit high
he is also going to discuss my needlephobia with me, but I am already aware that regular bloodtests need to be done
so at least it wasnt an outright no at trick 1 We ve left it at depending on lots of things it ll either be a yes or a no
It wont come as a surprise to me if they say no -if they do - yes I ll be cross with them & yes I ll be disappointed but I ll be ready for it

Try not to be too disheartened with your hospital appointment. As you said your consultant was impressed with your research on lung transplants , he now knows how serious you are and the research has made you aware of the pros and cons of this surgical treatment.
Because he has arranged for you to speak with the dietitian and he will discuss your needle phobia I would see this as a positive step forward and hopefully it won’t be long before your accepted. And if you’re not, don’t give up trying. As I have found in life there are many hurdles, we just have to keep jumping over them.
Hello there. It's a very long road to transplant but you are being proactive which is wonderful. If you have been reading up on it, you will know the challenges that go with it. I am so pleased you are taking this initiative to ecplore your options. Wishing you the very best!
P.S. if you would like to join a support group I know a good one.
If it is a yes, you will then have to go through 3 or 4 days of tests before a further decision can be made. I'm 5 years post double lung at Wythenshawe, and am regularly there for clinic and other things.
Pretty good, I have a stenosis in my right lung which needs attention every 6 to 8 weeks, but besides that my life is good. Play table tennis a few times a week and walk my dogs a few Km each morning.
wow...inspiring..I've had most of my right lung due to 2 separate cancer diagnosis...if it returns the rest comes out! Hopefully my left lung stays clear....
hi horseygirl, it sounds positive to me too. I just want to say about your needle phobia, I must be the worst ever and have refused all covid jabs, flu jabs and even the finger prick to see if I was diabetic plus the blood test to rule out if I had a blood clot when I was struggling to breathe ( turns out it was a collapsed lung). Even then when they wanted to put in a chest drain I refused the needle Upto when the doctor said I’m going at 5 lol. I also refused the anti blood clot injections while in hospital ( had the sexy socks lol )
Lately I’ve been in so much pain with my joints and felt like I’m 80 and severely depressed that when I called my doctor she explained that even though I have this phobia I could really do with having a blood test to rule out rheumatoid arthritis. I asked for some numbing cream and I booked myself in for the dreaded test. I went and I explained ( broke down) how scared I was and she was lovely, didn’t rush me, I told her not to tell me what she was doing but just talk to me. It was all over by the time I had told her how old my 4 grandchildren were, I was so grateful to her that she started crying lol. I knew I had to do it because I was in so much pain, so I’m sure if this is something you really need then you too can conquer this. I can honestly say I’m not cured of my phobia but I can do it again. You will be totally fine. Good luck and keep us posted xx
