Hi, Can anyone tell me, do you get the results of spirometry tests on the day or do you have to wait for them?
Thank you.

Hi. At the hospital I attend you don't receive your results on the day unless you are also seeing the respiratory consultant/doctor. I usually have my test either one or two weeks prior to seeing the doctor 🌹
Hi Lupaal. When I had full pulmonary function tests I asked the technician if my results had gone up after the reversibility testing which he did answer but told me that it wasn’t a diagnosis. The results are checked over by someone (consultant) in the department and then passed to the person who made the referral. I got my diagnosis in a letter and was given an appointment with the consultant.
However, when I have had spirometry as a monitoring test I have been given the results at the end of the appointment.
If you have had the test before and you have a nice technician they can tell you if it is better or worse than your previous tests. I've been told a couple of times now, but if it's your first they cannot compare
Hi for my first spirometry test I had to wait a month. This was only because the consultant wanted a face to face appointment to explain all my results.
I did ask the man doing the test at the time and all he said was I can tell you was a smoker. So I obviously knew it was not good.
Hope you get your results sooner and a good outcome.
Issy x
Interesting! I have to confess I've decided to go private to get my spirometry done as I wasn't prepared to wait (could take months in my particular GP surgery) and I've already realised, from this forum, that the beta blockers I was on (as a migraine preventative rather than for high BP) should not be taken by people with lung diseases or asthmas as they can make breathing worse. I've booked the full package, with a GP appointment after the spirometry, so I hope I will get my results on the day, but it's not guaranteed even with going private!
I had lung scans and a cat scan the same day I had my spirometry test.
My consultant wanted everything in one day . I think that’s why my spirometry results took longer. x
Thanks for all the replies .
My consultant does a follow up appointment and the nurse who does the spirometry will not give you any data
I get told by the technician if my results are up or down compared to last time, the test is only an assessment of your lung function it can’t diagnose an illness. The actual diagnosis is given by the consultant after getting the results of other tests
I have only had a Spirometry test done at my doctor surgery by a nurse and was told straight away by her my results and she got me an urgent appointment with a doctor in the practice who just gave me Sabutamol at the time. Brian
I had this at my local hospital and was told that unless requested a hospital does not have to inform your GP of test results.
If you are on the hospital's app you can see your results there. It is a chart with lots of numbers though , that's why a consultant is needed to interpret the numbers. Also other tests are needed for a diagnosis.
all the spirometry tests I’ve had have been at gp surgery. Results straight away.
I asked my spirometerist (?) and got them on the day. But the full evaluation will go to the doctor who ordered it with a copy to your GP if not him/her.
I got an answer as to whether I had COPD on the day, but I had to wait 4 weeks for the full report.
