DAO Supplement + Lung Transplant.

Hello,

I realise this is going to be a very strange post, but this is stress that this is a genuine question / request,

I may need a lung transplant in the near future. Nothing is set in stone yet, but it's a possibility. I haven't been in contact with a transplant team yet or anything.

One possible stumbling block: I suffer from some of histamine problem. Some foods and medications make me itch.

I manage my symptoms by taking fexofenadine (antihistamines) 4x daily, and over-the-counter DAO tablets.

I spoke to a pulmonologist about fexofenadine and he didn't seem concerned about taking fexofenadine post-transplant, but he had no idea what DAO tablets were and couldn't offer any answer whether taking them would be permissible.

If anyone is in regular contact with a transplant team that can advise them on which supplements are permissible or not, I would really, really appreciate it if you could ask them whether this supplement is permissible:

amzn.eu/d/cnY1lCN

Basically, DAO breaks down histamine in the intestines and this supplement provides extra DAO for those that have a histamine problem such as myself.

It's ingredients are:

Cellulose (vegetable source), (Peas * Pisum Sativum, Lentils * Lens Culinaris), Hydroxypropylcellulose (vegetable source), Stearic Acid (vegetable source) and Silicon Dioxide (mineral source).

Again, I realise this is a strange post, but I have no way of finding out this information myself, and I desperately need to know the answer.

Thank you.

We aren't qualified to answer the questions which you are putting to us. If you do get referred to the transplant team there will be many tests and meetings before they accept you. Then will be the time to speak about it all to the experts. We do have a few post transplant members who may be along to talk to you. We are all different though and they may not have had the problems which you do. Try to stay calm and work on keeping yourself as fit as possible whilst you wait.

Littlepom is exactly right. No-one here can "ask a transplant doctor" on your behalf because everyone's situation is different. This situation pertains to you and your own medical issues. I am not sure why you desperately need to know right now but there are medical practitioners who can advise you once the ball gets rolling. If I ask my transplant team on your behalf, they will ask me why I need to know this because they are aware of all my medication and will be curious. I could tell them I am asking on someone else's behalf and predictably they will tell me they can't give advice on behalf of another patient. I honestly think this is not a very big issue compared to the actual evaluation for transplant which can in itself be very rigorous and the outcome unpredictable. Best wishes and I hope things move along in a positive way for you soon. 🙋‍♀️🐕

The basic ingredients of the DAO according to the list you gave, are vegetable fibre (or roughage as it used to be known), a saturated fat, and finely milled quartz sand. These should not pose a problem in future, but do discuss taking them with your consultant if you ever get to the stage of assessment for a transplant.

Wishing you all the best.

Once you get referred to a transplant unit you will have LOTS of tests and meet the transplant team, then you can ask all your questions. I find it useful to write them down. The day can be very long and exhausting and it's easy to forget pertinent questions and answers. I'm sorry I can't answer your actual question.

Since having mild Covid in the beginning of December I have had itchy hives. In a Zoe podcast on the subject I found out that sprouted legumes contain DAO. It was interesting to read that the main ingredient in your supplement is pea, presumably sprouted.

I was looking into DAO for histamine problems but for me they are contraindicated because I take a platelet thinner. I am unable to get an answer from any medical doctor as to if this is just overcaution.

Not what you're looking for?
