Hi everyone, I am struggling to find out what is wrong still. Its been about 4 weeks since the dogs attacked mine and ever since my health has gone downhill. I was doing so well before. Suddenly started getting really debilitating pains in my right side so had an xray yesterday and waiting for results but put on 40mg a day prednisone to help with my breathing, started them this morning for a week. Just wondered if anyone has been on them and when it started to work ๐ค soon I hope. Any answers would be so very grateful ๐ ๐ฅฒ
Struggling : Hi everyone, I am... - Lung Conditions C...
Struggling
Prednisone generally starts working pretty quickly, usually within a day or two. How long are you taking them for?
Prednisolone usually starts to work pretty quickly .... a few hours after the first dose for me it normally gets "easier to breathe"
I find that prednisolone starts taking effect with me after 3 days. You should feel a difference once yours take effect. Hope you soon begin to feel better.
Hi, I had to look back at your Trauma post to read what happened. It must have been horrendously scary & highly stressful hence your lung reaction at the time. It's my belief (no idea if it's backed up by science) that there are levels or degrees of post traumatic stress. We're all different and have different physical or mental reactions to trauma .....ie, when my little brother was killed in '78 my sis & l were utterly grief sticken. In our family signs of emotion were frowned on so we stuffed it down. My reaction weeks later was agonising stomach pain which before long was dx as an ulcer. My older sis took longer, she began to have panic attacks & couldn't function, it took her a really long time to recover. We'd brought up our brother Billy, we'd been two little mums to him.
Different weak spots I suppose. Anyway, what you went through was very traumatic indeed, I'm not surprised you are still struggling. Do be good to yourself, stay warm, have treats if you can afford it, do some deep diaphragm breathing if you can and I do so hope the pred helps you on the road to recovery ๐ ๐.
ps I always have to take pred very very early mornings with an oatcake or two so I can sleep at night. P
I think prednisolone is a wonder drug. You can feel like you are never going to breath proper again, but after 2 to three days there is normally a marked difference, well on the way, It's also a good painkiller depending on what causes the pain.
Sending hugs and good wishes. It's sad to think you've been brought down by a couple of wretched dogs when you were doing so well. Hope the pred helps. xxx
I believe horrible situations like that can worsen any lung condition. It was about the time I was first diagnosed properly (I'd been coughing for about 15 years prior to diagnosis) a very very tragic and mentally painful situation came to a head for me, which I still grieve over every day. After that my health has got gradually worse and worse until I can only walk about 5 mins without stopping for breath and can't bend or reach far to do any tasks at all. Before that I could walk a good pace for about 30 mins and was still cutting the grass! Really hope you get some help to feel better soon. Take care xxxx
Sorry to hear your struggling maybe it's anxiety after the dog attack.. What happened there hope alls ok ๐
Yeah, dog is fine I made sure of that but ever since I've had problems because I think I was on all fours trying to so hard after it happened. Had an xray Thursday just waiting. On prednisone 3rd day no change yet unfortunately and my right side ribs suddenly started hurting. Its been 4 weeks since this happened and to be honest with you I just want answers. As my breathing has gone right down the pan. Thanks for your kind thoughts and at times myself and others would be lost without this forum. ๐ ๐
Yes any type of anxiousness can affect our breathing and prednisone works but for me gives sleeplessness which is a pain. Good luck
Usually they start to work very quickly .yhey will help with hhe pain .help clear phlegm and generally help to make you feel better . 40mg is a goid dose my health authority on ly usually gives 30mg which I feel is not enough goid luck and hope yiu have a quick recovery Dave
Stress mw .can't have been nice to have your god attacked and this must weight heavily on your mind .stress is terrible for copd .I wish you luck .Dave
Thanks Dave, did really strain my breathing at the time. I slept through the night for the first time last night and today started coughing quite a bit. Hopefully this is the start of getting on the mend. The only thing I worry about now is only 2 days left of prednisone. Thanks for cheering me up chook. Fingers crossed ๐ค ๐
Hi to you, I have been on Prednisone for quite a few years on and off and I found them to work really quickly, I was on them for a month and then had to take the dose down gradually so all in all it was about six weeks but they did the job and whenever my bronchi gets bad I am prescribed them, luckily have not had them so far, so fingers crossed I can get through December without any. Hope you soon feel a lot better and that they work for you.
Hi MellyWelly, sorry to hear what happened to youโฆtrauma and anxiety definitely affects our breathing. Re Prednisoloneโฆit seems to be a wonder drug for some COPD sufferers but Iโve been prescribed that on three occasions and it didnโt do a single thing for me. I donโt mind thoughโฆif I could avoid taking anything with steroids in it I would.
Can I ask what did work for you as I am on my 5th day of them now and I am still the same. Thanks for replying ๐
This probably isnโt the answer you want to hear but I just let myself get better naturally (the last time I got very ill was when I got Covid in August 2022). I donโt tend to have โflare upsโ fortunately. We are all different and I try and avoid steroids and antibiotics if at all possible (although I appreciate my Trilegy Ellipta inhaler has steroids in it). I take Seven Seas supplements with immunity and fish oil plus Natures Bounty gentle iron and B12 complex and I really do think they help general health. In fact Iโve been told by a doctor recently Iโm a very healthy person despite my COPD. My husband also used to get painful knees (presumably some form of arthritis) and since weโve been taking these supplements he hasnโt been having any pain in his knees. As I said we are all differentโฆmaybe your COPD is a similar type to mine which is why you are not seeing any results from the Prednisone.
