Hi i have had a cronic cough for many years and Asthma my doctor suggested trying 5 mg of morphine which i wasn't happy about but within a few days my cough has almost gone. Has anyone else tried this

Years ago I tried morphine for a persistent cough. Unfortunately it didn’t help me. Pleased you having a positive response to the treatment.

Hi First I have COPD / Asthma and dyspnea ,

I have advanced Cervical Degeneration and worn shoulder pain.

So I was givem Morphine for severe pain - A liquid Morphine used with an oral syringe.

It helps the pain but also helps my dyspnea - Not a cough but how morphine works in that area.

So yes used correctly Morphine is a decent drug for pain, breathing and coughs . Glad you are better,

Personally I have not taken it however many members of this forum take it when needed. Oromorph is the liquid form & 5mg is a very very tiny dose so you needn't worry about taking it. Lots of people find it a great help particularlyfor excessive coughing. It should be kept carefully especially if there are others in the home. I used to administer it to people, it had to be kept in two locked safe cupboards and always countersigned with every dose administered.

Have been on 10 mcg/hour of this in patch form for a few months for lumbar spine pain control and will continue for several more months too. Like you, nottowell, I was v wary, and talked it through at length with GP. Can't comment on efficacy re cough (although my bronch has behaved itself anyway since the start of the pandemic, so not that helpful). I usually also back it up with Panadol Extra Advanced twice a day. But can say only disadvantage so far is fact that no alcohol allowed! 😉

Morphine is very good for coughs but I am surprised the doctor did not try a codiene base linctus first. However it worked so I would not be worried as 5mg is not that large a dose.

I take 1.25ml Oramorph every 4 hours to help with breathlessness, it’s a standard treatment. I was concerned over addiction and driving, but after reading the NHS guidelines and talking to some doctors I was happy that my concerns were not valid. My persistent cough was finally diagnosed as an allergic reaction to stomach acid fumes, I’m now on Omeprazole and the coughing has stopped

Hi, I'm on morphine sulphate and it's because I have chronic and severe pain from all the things I suffer from, I have asthma and c.o.p.d and suffer recurring chest infections. My doctor would not give me morphine for my chest/cough, and without been disgusting I cough up so much sticky phlegm all colours morphine doesn't work for that,I hope this helps 🙂

I'm allergic to morphine so I'm on oxycodone and codeine linctus for breathlessness and the intractable cough and they've helped a lot!

What strength oxycodone are you on - It's about 50% stronger than morphine.

5mg/5ml. I take 1.25 mls three times a day and 2mls at bedtime. I can take up to 2 mls per dose. Or I can ask to be put on slow release tablets if I prefer. I prefer the liquid as I can adapt it easier, e.g. if heavy pilates class is imminent! 🤣 It was prescribed by the palliative team at Harefield lung transplant clinic.

My Morphine was prescribed for severe pain, 2.5 -5-00 ml every fours hours.

I normally take 3.5 ml but if pain is severe I take 5ml which is 10mg. The fact it helps my breathing is a side effect.

Mine prescribed by GP.

Oxycodone is stronger than morphine . But dose is calculated.

I would not like slow release, you don't know what is happening.

I agree. Much more in control with liquid, plus I think the tablets are a bigger dose. It's hard enough sometimes to take enough to ease the breathing with out causing tiredness.

Spot on - My GP gave me liquid as I could take 2.5 ml - 5ml. I often use 3.5ml which IN MORPHINE is 7mg.

With tablets I would have had no options, I think liquid which enables the least dose to use, Is sensible.

The long lasting ones - To be honest I don't want morphine stuck in my body 24/7.

You nailed it, enough to help your breathing without making you like a zombie.. Mine is for pain, but it helps my breathing also, so double for the money

Yes I've been on it for 6ish months I take 5mg morning and night and it suppresses my cough, it also seems to suppress my appetite...no bad thing as I have a couple stones to lose due to inactivity. Stick with it.
