Oramoph

I was doing some research on Oramorth for COPD, I asked my Dr for her opinion on it & she said she had good reports on it, she has prescribed me with the minimum dose for someone with COPD 4 times a day. Its early days yet but I'm hoping it will give me a bit more breath as I have been struggling with doing anything that leaves me breathless. Keep your fingers crossed for me to feel a little less breathless. And please tell me if anyone else has tried Oramorph.

Hi Jansy. I have been on oramorph for over 3 years. I take it as needed, not on a regular basis like you. I find it helps to ease breathlessness and also takes the edge off associated anxiety. I hope that you find it helpful.

Hi thank you for replying about Oramorph, the only problem I've got is it's made me constipated, does it affect you this way, if so what do you take.

Hi, I don't take it myself Jansy16 but lots of good posts and their replies if you write Oromorp in the search bar. Regarding the other issue, a heaped teaspoon of ground flaxseed stirred into your daily muesli, porridge or cereal works wonders. Brilliant fibre plus its very good for us. You can buy it ready ground or buy the seeds and grind it yourself, it swells loads when ground (I use my old coffee grinder). An acquaintance had severe constipation and she took a tablespoon in her muesli until she was a lot 'better' then a smaller regular amount.

No, it doesn't have that effect on me but several of my other meds do. I have laxido on prescription to take as needed.

Hi Jansy, I started taking it 6 weeks ago and find it is helping I’m on 1.25ml every 4 hours as required so I tend to take 3 doses a day.

I have chronic severe asthma and terrible breathlessnessI had oromorph a few years ago for pain and found it helped the breathlessness but made me feel 'spaced out ' and slowed down my activities. Also was very scared of addiction. I hope you will find it helpful and get some relief.

I also on oramorph. I think it has really help my breathing. And seems to get a lot of mucus up too. It definitely helps breathing. Just be careful if you drive as it’s 6 hours. Then drive. Until you know the effects. On yourself. Your DR. Will keep you right xxxx

Hi Jansy I've used oramorph for 4 yesterday and find it very good for breathlessness especially when going out and doing tasks, I use laxido on occasion but don't have much constipation though I take many other meds also, it does help given in low doses. Best of luck.

I'm allergic to morphine so take oxycodone which has the same effect on breathlessness. Palliative increased my dosage to 2mls last week as I'm struggling a little. I don't feel spaced out. I'm obsessed with fruit and veg as constipation is a concern. I have a HUGE box of laxido but don't want to take it. I find fruit, veg and nuts suit me better.

Just as a reminder and for those who may not know - oramorph is in fact morphine delivered by mouth rather than hypodermic. It should be treated with great care. It is habit forming, especially if used in strength as a painkiller. This is whit is often only used in end-of-life cases. Its use as an aid to breathing is fairly new science and the dosage is much lower. Or so I have read.

I take Morphine Sulphate which is exactly the same as Oramorph. I take 5ml (10mg) but this is for pain, it would be less for breathing. Not just for end of life care, it is a good painkiller when other drugs work no more,

it can be habit forming but if taken for pain or breathing problems at the prescribed dose. Addiction as we know it is not likely to occur.

You are right there are rules - Never use more than the maximum dose your GP set or lower if that works and above all - Never swig the Morphine from the bottle, use syringe to measure the dose. it's safe is rules are followed and any worrying side effects reported.

Hi, I take Morphine Sulphate for pain which is a higher dose. It does help breathing as well as pain relief but, side effects such as constipation can be a problem, maybe less so on a lower dose..
