Ora-morph
Hi, is there no dispensing lable on the box or bottle? The usual dose is 2.5ml up to 5ml as required. When I was first prescribed it I was wary and took 1.25ml to begin with but found that it had no effect so at the next dose I increased it to 2.5ml which helped a lot to calm me and ease my breathlessness. You should have been provided with a dosing syringe or spoon. I have both but prefer the syringe as it's possible to be more accurate with that.
It is usually prescribed for anxiety and severe breathlessness and can help to ease both of these things.
I use 0.5ml I have it to help calm me down before I go out.
Oramorph is morphine and is used to give pain relief and help breathlessness. I'd suggest trying small doses and working up to what does the job for you. Watch out because it causes constipation. Might be an idea to take a laxative.
I think you need to call the ward you were discharged from. They have access to your notes and the reason and method of using Ora-Morph. It is a dangerous drug and addictive so I am disappointed that they did not make clear safe useage. Oramorph is prescribed to block the cough reflex and benzodiazapines(and others) are prescribed for anxiety. Please speak to your discharge nurse who will be pleased (I Hope) to help.
As others have said its an opiate used for pain relief and to ease breathlessness. Some of us are on oramorph I'm allergic to morphine so I'm on oxycodone and codeine linctus. You really need to find out why it was prescribed and the dosage. Another way to find out is to ring the pharmacy of the hospital you were in or search your discharge notes.
I have just been prescribed Oramorph for COPD, my dose is 1.25ml every 4 hours, the NHS guide is up to 2.5ml every 4 hours as required. At this dose it is not addictive and should not affect you ability to drive unless you feel drowsy
Hi Wooly-gal. I take 5ml four times a day to help with breathlessness and find this really works. I also suffer from a spinal problem and this keeps the pain under control and therefore assists with mobility issues. Like someone else has said, you may need to take a laxative as it can make you constipated. I'm surprised you have no instructions though as this is a controlled drug I believe.
Respiratory nurse felt it was above her pay grade to advise on dosage of ora-morph. Now have appt with doctor for next week. Totally confused as to when I should take it or my blue inhaler (salbutamol) or the lorazepam! On top of the trimbow I take twice a day!! Hoping doc will clarify!
